Other: FX9 - Monitor audio channel 3 & 4

So im getting to know this little beast, and trying to figure out its quirks.

Is there a setting im missing for monitoring audio channel 3 & 4? It seems i have to choose between 1 & 2, or 3 & 4, or one single channel? At least for 3,5mm audio out monitoring. I would love a "hear all audio" option!

I use an XLR lavalier on channel 1, shotgun on channel 2, and Sonys digital lavalier on the hotshoe channel 3. During rain today, i used the rain cover and it probably made moved the receiver out of the hotshoe a little bit, making a bad connection with the digital receiver, so theres no audio from that lavalier in channel 3. I didnt find a way to monitor it live, and i could not remove the rain cover to check for audio signal during the shoot.

Luckily all the action is near the camera, so the shotgun is ok to use. The critical track was channel 1, and that was monitored during the take.

Yeah i assume its the Mix All setting. Where was that two days ago when i looked at the menu? Reminds me of this meme!

Yeah, one can wish?

Seems the "display" option only toggles the two channels already there on and off.

Im pretty sure there is no way to get 4 channels up in the EVF, and rightly so.. anything more than 2 you should have a sound recordist .. its getting stupid now with production just taking one of there main crew members out of the equation .. lets get rid of the useless production team and keep the audio person ..

Agreed x10,000!

I am my own owner operator director. Its just two lavaliers and a shotgun, on run and gun shooting doc style. Not really suitable with a cable running to a sound guy anyway, hiking around and avoiding stepping on rocks and falling with the camera.

Plus, as a director, i can spend his salary on other stuff

But in seriousness, yeah, its the budget being low that is forcing priorities like this.

Everything is separate sound now , with Sound Devices etc. recording the main audio... you just have one of the small single channel radio mic RX on the camera as a scratch track.. and TC sync ,sometimes a tiny TC box on camera too.. its the best of both worlds .. your never attached to the audio person.. production has ISO tracks .. and they can go off and get wild track anytime.. being cabled up is a thing of the past fortunately ..
Budget thats the thing exactly .. there are still 5 production people for every crew member .. and frankly at least 2 or 3 of that 5 are useless.. we the people actually making the product are being squeezed ,rest assured the people in an office are still getting the same rate or more.. we are making up the difference ..

We work different jobs, im usually alone :2vrolijk_08:

The sound guy in my local area is still wired, and its a 5 hour drive to nearest big city with pro audio freelancers and the like. So, living in a rural place has its downs. But also alot of ups.

I LOVE being the under paid camera person on a set with a bunch of marketer types that work 3hrs a day and have 4hrs of coffee breaks and lunch, and yet they are the ones with 6digit salaries. Maybe fire a few of them haha. But more than likely they'll just start shooting everything themselves.

EDIT, I am so sorry, haha, I really don't work in that space very often because I dislike it. There is a lot of money to be made in the commercial and advertising space, even for just the small web stuff. My attitude about all of this would be HORRIBLE if that is the work I did. I am much more of an indie person that doesn't mind taking less money so I can do things I am passionate about. Not a good way to live going into a pandemic, so, I might know cameras and craft, but I try to stay away from giving people career advice, because lord knows I didn't choose career.

He uses just a hardwired mixer, with no local recordings being made?? Wow

Ah ok understood.. just that you mentioned not being attached by cables to an audio person in rough terrain .. which pretty much never happens these days even on the smallest shoot.. even if they don't have sound devices there are much cheaper alternatives around now.. and its great .. so much better than being tethered .. a very good step forwards ..

He probably uses wireless stuff on the big shoots where the gear is supplied from a rental company in the capitol city, but he doesnt own this wireless gear himself. So it was wired indie level last time i booked him for a shoot.

Sounds great having a sound guy sitting wireless and fixing everything in the background. Im missing out, but like i said, its 4,5 hours one way drive to the next city, and 8 hours to the capitol, or 9,5 hours to the second largest city. Theres nothing inbetween these when it comes to sound. Just indie dudes like myself with FS5s, FS7s, drones, and a few REDs here and there working on our own passion projects.

I finance my own stuff, writing applications etc. So in reality im just a part time camera operator. Most of the time im directing and producing.

Maybe better than having to put up with grumpy sound recordists then anyway :)
