FX1 with adapter? what to do? plus accesories

I've spent a lot of time reading all the past posts about adapters, still lenses, follow focus and matte boxes - learning heaps.
I'm trying to work out how I should get geared up and thought some experienced advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

Basically I have a FX1 which I want to set up with 35mill adpater, Nikon lenses, follow focus, matte box and of course rods.
HOWEVER
I am hoping to invest in a RED next year and would want to transfer the rods, matte box and FF to the RED with a S16 zoom lens.
Can't afford to stuff up and get something I can't transfer across.

From everything I read it sounds like the G35 is the best value for performance adpator but I can't find any info on whne the next batch of orders will be taken!?!?!? Looked everywhere?!?!

Going with Redrock seems like a good idea as
- M2 has got some great reviews (little light loss sounds good)
- follow fouc and rod system looks good and upgradeable to cinema lenses
- matte box should be revealed soon - sounds like it will tranfer across no problem
- can buy everything from one place (less chance of me getting the bits that won't go together!!)
However, it sounds like it takes forever to get anything delivered from these guys!!

Any other suggestions.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!:dankk2:

I have a fx1 and a m2 and im very happy. I liked the g35 alot but i dont know if its ever coming back out. You also might wanna look at the sg35.

I don't know very much about the red but would u need a adapter at all?

Thanks for your reply

No I won't need the adapter for RED but I'd like to use all the other accesories I invest in such as rods, follow focus and matte box.

What accesories have you added to your set-up? How long did it take to get your M2???

cheers!

i dont see you having a problem with the rods and plate with any setup. Be careful with the mattebox and ff. Some 35mm lenses, move in and out as they focus, also some of the lense's focus ring move back and forth also. I've seen some mattebox's with a cloth center that allow the lense to side forward and back. With the ring problem, u might have to get wider gears.

Thanks Deedive I'll have to make sure I get the right FF and MB.

Thanks for your links Emanuel but I still can't get my head around where the G35 is at. Firstly is it available, how do you order?
Secondly sounds like a few different poeple are getting together with their respective products to put toegther a complete package offering?? The thread is hard to understand. Is this true?? When will this package be available.

Still seems like the M2 offering is the best if you want a high quality product for adapter, FF and MB.

any more thoughts/advice/opinions appreciated

cheers

You're welcome nalu! But try @Dan. He was who Jonathan Houser (G35) asked what this master of the 35mm adapters can give us. And if in the beginning the price was $8,000 now will be @$1,200 - $1,500 (quite different = other economies of scale). Visit his website. This man is the best. When I defended here G35 I can confess it was only 'cause Dan's product was so much expensive. It WAS...not now! 'cause I had opportunity to download one hollyzoo* sample and I can tell you: simply amazing! Better than any other...

But for sure cinemek/G35 is also the other hint concerning 35mm adapters. Jonathan is a very decent (= honest, too) guy. If he didn't yet deliver it that's just because he's waiting for the best product that he can deliver.

I'm sure Dan is the Pope. Even as Jonathan's one of his lights.

Or try PM rawfa -- he's an expert here too though as customer not 35mm adapter provider.

EDIT

Download the 35mm footage...and see what Dan is capable to offer! He is the guru.

Hey Emanuel, old chap, are all those 35mm video on holyzoo from Dans' adapter? They look freaking sweet!

As for the "expert" coment, I apreciate it but you're being exagerated. I have been following all diferent brands of 35mm adapters for the last 2 years and I have downloaded every video I could (there's a couple of them I have certainly watched more than a hundred times). IMO, the factors that should be taken into account should be (the order is random):
1 - Which one suits the best your shooting style/necesities/personal look
2 - Barrel distortion
3 - Grain
4 - Color aberration
5 - Light loss
6 - Bokeh
7 - Latitude
8 - Softening of the image
9 - Mobility

So far I didn't find THE ONE that combines all of these factors (where are you, Jonathan?!), so the formula is to take all of these numbers and put them on a scale and see which features are more important to you and which features are you willing to sacrifice. And, obviously, look intensely and exhaustively at all footage you can get your hands on. In the end it's less the techinical specification and more the image each adapter produces...so I guess to a certain extent it ends up being sort of personal.

Rafa and aren't you an expert?!

Who do you want to deceive? :) Don't worry! That's our personal secret...of almost 18,000 dvxuser.com members, aside those readers have been following your inputs since the cinemek.com forum times. BTW, did you do any backup of that stuff? Really helpful. I agree, where are you Jonathan? Come soon!

EDIT -- Steev Dinkins (holyzoo co-owner) bought one of the Dan's units.

Emanuel,

Any links for the G35 ? Cinemek site is a bit of a mess, I can't find no specs etc.

nalu,

Same here, I own a FX1E and thinking about compatibility issues for my gear when I upgrade. Redrock seems a very good choice. FF and Mattebox seems to fit in everything. And considering the price I thing that this is the end of the road for me. They mast create a bundle thought with a serious discount for any of us buying all the gear from them, I thing is reasonable and I hope it is for them to.

best
Andreas

It's a tough thing to buy!

A discount from Redrock would be welcome and make a package very attractive. Do you know what the availability of their gear is?? I haven't been able to get any solid info.

Rawfa
Maybe you need to add availability to the list!!! It seems that the best adapters just aren't available - let alone trying to get any sort of information on them.
Light loss is definately high on my list as I don't have the lights or time to pump up the light level where I'm shooting - I'll predominantly be relying on natural light.

Emmanuel
Got in touch with Dan and he got straight back to me which is awesome. Unfortunately it seems that it will be a while before you receive an adapter from him. I should have ordered ages ago! Shame I'm so impatient!

Any other info and thoughts welcome.

I hate to say it nalu, but shooting indoor with natural light is very very difficult with the fx1 plus any adapter. Especially if u don’t want the gain all the way up.

yep!!!

yep!!!

Yes, it does seem that way but if you only lose a stop or two it shouldn't be too bad. Seems like the better adpaters don't lose a heap?? Would you agree??

You often need lights indoors, if I get an adapter that doesn't suck too much light then I shouldn't need to upgrade the lights I would use.
Fortunately most of my shooting initially will be outdoors with nature's llght available - and of course it's always bright here in Australia :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I'm still heading down the redrock pathway on this I think, but still trying to find out availability etc.

The cool thing about this forum is all the helpful info and people. Please post when you find out something about the g35.

True, you wont have any problems outdoors in Australia. I wish I were in Australia.

Maybe it’s me but with the fx1 not being the greatest in low light every half stop feels like 3.
I have actually got pretty good usable indoor footage with only available light, gain all the way up (captured in HD, CCed to death than downconverted to SD) To me the fx1-z1's gain is one of it best qualities. But I'm sure any of the adapters with a stop or less light loss will do just as good.

One other thing about low light. If you can keep all your lenses between 1.2 and 1.8 it will help.
My lenses are 1.4 or 2.8. When I switch it hurts:(

Which means 4-6 weeks plus shipping time (which cab be 2 more weeks). If you don't have any deadlines I think it's a good bet. I would love to get one because I really dig the look, but for me mobility counts many points. I don't know, maybe one day.

Gee it's hard to work out the best options.

There is no way I feel I can judge an adapter's performance off downloadable clips. There are so many variables.
And then every adapter has it's fans saying "the is the best ever!!!!!"

Then there are the price differences to consider as well.

One of my primary concerns is not which adpater I buy but the accesories I buy to go with it. I want to buy good quality but not super expensive. AND I want to buy accesories that will work with large S16mm film lenses as well as smaller Nikon 35mm lense.

HA HA it's all good fun and good learning though!!

Sounds like it can be a two month wait for Redrock's gear. By the time I received anything they would have the matte box released as well!

Been reading more on the SGpro and it sounds pretty good. Sent an email to Wayne and he got right back to me - he ships in two weeks! Awesome.
He's also developing a follow focus as well.

AboutRedrock: Yes, I personalyl wait until the mattebox is released. They will probably by then respond faster to demand also. Its probably a good time to wait if you can aford it.

best
Andreas
