Hi,

I´m new in this forum and in this Hobie.
Please help me choosing my first cam. Z1 or FX1?

I want to do some shortfilms with "film aspect"

Whats the main different between them? I saw a very good trailer made with FX1 ("Videoclub")

Thanks!

Hmm, unfortunetly niether cams really give a 'film look'. They both can distribute fake film imagery with the CineFrame option.. but even that looks pretty sappy.

I own an FX1. To get get the film look im looking for I shoot in 1080i [HDV] and do a 2:3:3:2 pulldown 24P render in Vegas 6.0. If done correctly, it is VERY comparible to a DVX or an XL1/2 cam.

Then again, it all depends on what you want. The Z1 has more audio capibilities, such as XLR inputs (you can easily buy a BeachTek Audio Adaptor for the FX1 and save the $1500 that the Z1 puts out).

My take? The FX1. You can upgrade the audio (like I said before) for 10x cheaper AND the CineFrame options that the Z1 has are just fake film illusions. The only really good reason to purchase the Z1 would be because of the 60i/50i ability and the fact that you can shoot in both NTSC and PAL.

Good luck on that.

isn't that the same (NTSC is liked to 60 hz and PAL to 50 Hz)?

They are linked, in that 60hz HD is only really applicable in the same territories that use NTSC for their standard-def display, and 50hz HD will only be valid in territories that are using PAL.

Some sticklers like me try to point out that HD is neither PAL nor NTSC, it's HD. But I think we're going to lose that battle and people are going to adopt the term "PAL" when talking about 50hz HD, and "NTSC" when talking about 60hz HD. It's totally inaccurate, but it'll likely become commonplace...

No please. Let's just give those guys "50i" and "60i". Insist. Please. I do also go nuts about all that PAL NTSC talk in HD.
Barry, thanks for being pedant on that. Perhaps we can get some correct expressions in the future. As HD will (as I suppose) in most cases not be transfered as "phase alterneting line" or whatever PAL meens.
