FX1 or XL1?

I had that happen once. Some wierd error with my computer and then premiere crashed. When I opened up the project all the footage had mad interlacing like that. I have no idea what happened, but I had to rebuild the project. Its like even though you have interlaced video and youre viewing it on a computer the NLE should (and usually does) do something so you dont see it. There must be a setting that gets changed or can be changed so that the NLE either does or doesn't show you the interlacing while editing.

I haven't noticed any artifacting except for once when I bumped the color settings in the camera up above default and then did notice a little bit on reds and oranges but nothing on other colors. Maybe I've been lucky

Probably. The raw footage looks OK, but when I start pushing the grading I often get noise, banding and other artifacts in areas of fairly solid color where the MPEG-2 compression threw away a lot of detail.

I was talking to a guy on the web recently who works at a post house and he made the same complaint: if you try to grade HDV as aggressively as you could less compressed HD footage you can have problems.

I saw you check out the Canons. They come out this month, do 24 frames, via 24f mode and you can do a film out with it matching frame for frame. Plus they're supposed to be about the same price as the FX1s are. I used an FX1 for a very short time but if I were you I'd shoot 30CF and call it a day. If you put 30CF on TV the average person wouldn't know the difference. If you're actually doing a film out then you should wait for one of the upcoming 24p/f cameras or shoot on the DVX or XL2 for now. But honestly, wait a month. Plus this will give you time for tighter planning if you're on a low budget. Believe me, this is important. FCP 5.1.2 supports 24f (I don't know about 30f) and there's been a lot of footage thrown around. Some people are already preordering it.
