FX1 or DVX - help me please!!

I am looking for a versatile camera to use for shooting docs - to small coporate productions as well as looking toward indie film making in the near future.

I am torn between the FX1 from Sony - or the trusty DVX.

I know the FX1 has the HDV which should give me better quality and good low light options as well as giving the potential to author in HD.

However I am attached to the whole DVX thing and am not sure if I am just hanging on to that whole notion for nothing.

should i let go of my love for the dvx and get a fx1.

Any mature and sensible direction would be appreciated. (I am looking to get them for roughly the same price give or take one or two hundred more for the fx-1)

:dankk2:

I have the FX1 and I personally love it (once you've seen the HD image it can produce it's impossible to go back to the DVX's SD) but the lack of detailed image control and 24 frames option is kind of a turn off for me. The XLR adapter that I got for it also makes the cam a bit bulky. Overall, you can't go wrong with either camera but it seems like the new Canon A1 is the best of both worlds (HD, 24f, massive image option etc.) for not that much more ($4000 vs. $3300 for both the FX1 and DVX). There's even talks of an authorized Canon seller having it for $3500! Check out njce's A1 thread in the Canon section.

EDIT: BTW, if you decided you want an FX1 then I can sell you mine because I'm hoping to move on to the A1. Just PM me.

Hi fantasticfilm.

FX1 is a great camera. I have it and I prefer it even from SI or RED. I go even further and state that if you gave me twenty REDs or SI2K for free I would still prefer my FX1 !

...because right now I cannot aford that cind of workflow :)

So if you really need HD and you are on a budget, yes go with FX1. If you like mobility, as jade8472 stated, go with DVX.

Check Canon out, and If you can waite, SI and Red is on the corner. And before you know it there will be more.

Keep in mind that FX1 is almost noise free and FX1E (PAL) 1080i25p is visualy perfect.

best

thanks for the input - I went for the dvx in the end - but partly in this particular scenario because the fx1 had japanese menus etc. so i just stuck with the dvx that i fell in love with months ago.
I am going to get an hvx sometime but waiting for the p2 prices to get down to earth..........hmmmm
the other thing is that I am working with this sony xdcam disks which are blue ray.
They are inexpensive and hold 23GB. the file is an mxf.....and when you bring it into Final cut it runs native.....or am I imagining things??

Great choice.

I shoot a feature last year using the FX1. HD is great, low light is amazing. But once compressed to SD DVD, it looks worst than DVX SD DVD.

I am also at a point where I am torn between the DVX (my favourite camera ever!!!)or going HDV (DVX and FX1 are priced about the same here) and after much thought, I will go for the DVX.

The FX1 is a great camera but not for filmlike stuff. The cinema gamma sucks and the frame mode looks really unnatural.

Plus, HD is not picking up here anytime soon since SD TV and DVD are still the dominating format of choice.

The DVX will still have a lot of years left in it. 99% of the freelance jobs I have done so far has been with the DVX.

hey there I am only 14 and I have made a few commercials for some health clubs near by, and some great movies for school. Now I REALLY want to get a new camera and christmas is coming up, so I have been looking at a whole bunch of cameras and I cant decide between the DVX the XL2 and The FX1....I just now thought for sure I wanted the FX1, but does it really have japanese menus???? I dont think I could deal with that... thanks!

The FX1 I used have english menu.

The way I look at it, for the film look, DVX is the king for now at its price range.

The FX1 has great looking HDV footages but really not suited for filmlook.

It really depends on what you want to do with it at the end of the day.

Some might even say XL2 is the popular choice for weddings or events and I will tell you that is not true.

Here, events, TV shows, weddings, concerts, corporate, ads, all are commonly shot with the DVX.

The DVX is probably the most popular and common prosumer cam around here.

Heck, even TV stations here are replacing their Betacam with the DVX because of the price, brodcast quality images, and portabilty.

i have used both. i disagree, the fx1 can product a good film look. Dvx is closer out of the box. When i was buying a camera i had a hard time chosing. 24p, better color, 4:3 or HDV 16:9 i eventually got a fx1 and i love my camera. you cant go wrong with either.

vincent wong, take a look at this fx1 footage and tell me if it looks like film or not.

Dude I have owned both of these camera's. I bought the DVX over the sony cause everyone recomended it on the forum. I loved it but HD is now the current technology and the Sony gives a great picture.
Click here to see examples of films that I have made with the HVX, Sony FX1 and the DVX and judge for yourself.
The camera used is given when you click on one of the thumbs.

I have shot plenty of footage with the FX1 but had to convert it to SD for use. Frankly once converted the image looked bad. A couple of the guys I work with all shot DVX and love it. Another thing to consider is the jackfield on the FX1, or lack of one. Stereo minis... not going to happen in my world. All my gear is XLR's. Also remember that it not as visually versatile as the DVX or A1.
It's a good camera, but if you want greater creative control go with the DVX or A1.

Great footage by the way, I have a FX1 I like the cam it has it's pros, and con just like the rest of the other cameras on the market.I just sent for my letus flip adapter,WILL BE SHOOTING A 90MIN Film with the fx1...
to me it's all in the lighting, and plan post production.
to bad we don't have real 24p''but theres others ways around that.im going to keep my FX1,and later this year God willing I will get a DVX cam with know problem
my FX1 will buy me One.happy movie making to everyone.

I dont know what you guys are talking about with low light performance. I get much a better picture at low light with my dvx than my z1u.
