fx1 new music video

Hello everybody,

we've just finished a no budget music video for a belgian rock band called norma.

Here's the link to the video:

It was shot with a PAL FX1 in HDV and two PAL Z1. We shot with a shutter of 1/25 (making the picture actually progressive) in low light. We had a tripod and a small Cobra Crane. We did capture with ConnectHD, edited in HDV in Premiere Pro 1.5.1, sfx and color grading in After Effects 6.5. The fake motion control effect/360 shots were done with just a tripod and AfterFX.

We hope you'll like it :-)

PS: Dear John Hudson, there is no girl at all in this video, really, don't be affraid :-)

Think the 360 shots are really nice, they work well. Unfortunately the download stalled before the end, god knows why.

Where the video transitions from split screen to full screen, I didn't like the way the black lines disappear a few frames after the video changes, it looks a bit awkard. I don't know if you plan on changing anything at this point though...? IMO, cutting more to the beat would work nicely. Some cuts are already like this and personally, I preferred them.

Finally, I would go more to town with the grading. It still looks a little like video for my taste. Try a few crazy things, and then reign it in. When I colour grade, I sometimes just fling settings around blindly and you get some ace results. Of course you mostly get crap! You have used what you had really well, a good grade would finish it off nicely.

In all I think it is really good for zero budget.

I agree on the grading, it would help alot.

Nice video, I really like the composiitons and the camera moves. Gotta give you props there. I'm not a huge fan of the split screen effect, but I think you pulled it off admirably. Good job!

Love the 360 shots. And here is why. In alot of videos the 360 is always moving at the same pace and sometimes thats all they do. You added in some cuts to other shots, and varied the pace of the shots, looked great. And there was no dead space where I was waiting for the camera to reach the next subject. It all moved briskly and you kept htem interesting.

Well now that I've stroked your ego get out there and make another for me to critique.

Pretty cool man. I need to get that FX1. Or something, its so confusing on what camera to get! Great editing work also.

Really nice work 'black sheep' I found this super pro looking. You did them proud I think. But damn; just one chick?

Hey guys nice work. I'm always waiting for you to post something new. Love your work.

PS: CAN I BE YOUR FRIEND?

good night

Really welll done. The lighting was spot on.

Going from split screen (black lines) to full screen was a bit jarring .. the lines just seem to staticly disappear. Might be kinda cool to have them gradually "diasappear" by bringing in the full frame from left to right or vice versa. Does that make sense? Hard to describe, but the black line would slowly dissapear, like a fuse.

Anyway ... very nice video. Thanks for posting.

I really liked the way you handled the video "cells". If you get too many complaints about the lines just disapperaing, you could always blur-fade 'em out to sort of "disolve" them in... but personally I thought it gave the whole thing a very clean look. I'm not sure I like the 1/25 shutter on the 25P video though. Knowing the way the camera works, you would have identical workflow and similar if not better resolution shooting CF25 with 1/50... which might make the image a little less fuzzy.

Especially good on the editing and post though! The whole video was really slick in terms of maintaining colour, composition and cleanliness.

thanks!!!

thanks!!!

thanks a lot everybody for the comments ! Sorry for the late answer, we had a lot of work to finish...

It was a 360 stage. Actually, we did shoot 9 static shots and stiched them together in After Effects to create a huge huge picture (something like 12000px x 1080px) and then did the panning in post

Here's a picture of the panoramic video: http://www.theblacksheep.be/temp/norma01.jpg

Actually, we did like the look of the 1/25 shutter. We still don't understand how or why it's even progressive (we just looked at the picture in AE and it surely is). This kind of semi-slow shutter helps making the movements smoother,... We won't use everytime but here it did work well. Actually, it shows really when you watch it on TV.

Thanks again,

the black sheep

PS: yes you can be our friend, no prob... As you asked so politely, the next video will present girls mr Hudson :-)

nice work

nice work

Looks pro. I thought the slpit screens were good, and brought the eye to interesting parts of the shot. Having the split lines dissappear wasn't jarring to me; I think the video is fine as it is.

Nice set, nice lighting, and I especially appreciate that the band is in sync with the sound track. Good concept, thanks for sharing.

Get more chicks in the next one! ;)

Really nice ! I agree that the when the black lines disappear it's kind of disturbing, but all together it's a wonderful job. It's too bad the band is pretty chezzy and dull though.

Keep up the good work
