Funky question for you

I was doing a side by side comparison of my DVX100b and my little Sony HC1 1080i camera and I was using a 32" CRT to focus on. What I noticed was this ... the 100b did not produce much of a moire (spelling?) on a CRT monitor as the HC1 did. Everytime I zoomed the HC1 had lots of moire and that means good focus on the CRT subject. What happened to the 100b? Has anyone out there done this and gotten lots of good swirly moire on the monitor? I know that the 100b had evidently been tramatized due to the couple of inner mounting screws near the front of the lens (holds the hood and focus ring only) being stripped out.

Is there a good test for sharpness of the camera? Can anyone suggest a custom in camera setting for making the cameras output appear sharper? Suggestions?

If you get a chance check your camera with your CRT TV and let me know if you do or do not get lots of moire pattern. Normally my DSLR cameras give me bunches of this and this tells me they are focusing very well.

not sure if I understand the question but....I turn on the EVS DTL on when I focus with the lcd. it's suppose to give me more detail for critical focus

Do you mean you were using the CRT as a monitor, or that you literally focused on it? Because otherwise I don't know why you'd get much moire anyway. And yes, that's spelled right, except that it takes an accent on the e that I can't remember how to do.

What I do is put the camera on a tripod that is perpendicular to the center of the 32" Sony TV. When I focus on it with my 100b (using video out to another CRT monitor to check the focus sharpness) I do not get as much moire' as I do with my Sony. In other words, the CRT that I am shooting as a model should show a moire' pattern in my LCD and CRT monitors to let me know that I am perfectly focused. My Sony camera is with major moire' and its video is sharp but it is a HD. When I compare it to my 100b, the 100b is not giving me the strong moire pattern on the viewing monitor as I feel it should so I worry about the lens sharpness.

Moire is when it gets those blackish-grey lines that flicker right? If that's the case, you will get much more moire when in progressive... Correct me if that isn't moire...

Moire is not a good thing. Sony cameras oversharpen by default and have weak filtering on the image sensors, and thus get nasty moire side-effects much easier. DVX is better designed optically, so gets less moire, more natural image.

If you want to increase the sharpness, then turn up the DETAIL and V.DETAIL settings in your scene file and reduce the CORING setting.

Also, what kind of monitor were you viewing on, SD or HD? If SD, then perhaps there is an issue with Sony's SD output from the camera. Maybe a really fast and dirty downconvert?
