Hey Guys,

There's this contest in Vancouver where you produce a commercial and send it into a radio station. They pick the best one and you win $5000!

The reason they are doing this is because they had a dancing commercial with sexy nurses, but the nurses complained so they yanked it.

So I decided to take my dance ability, and my DVX and make something.
I'm still learning the ropes but here is what I accomplished.

Really nice commercials,

I liked the second one better. Well, both are good, but you know, the chicks one caught my attention more.

I thought they were both funny.

good work on both of them man --

on the first one, the dialogue peaks too much (especially the hey!) for broadcast that's no good -- i would really consider getting those lines in ADR and replacing them...

the second one had good sound, and even spatially it sounded like it was coming from deep left... and the girls, OMG --

I think I like the Food Server one better. I shot the beyonce one first, I shot 60 freakin' minutes. And felt like I had nothing to chose from. When I did the next one, I only shot 30 mins. And felt like I had a ton of shots. I used mostly a quasi-steady cam for the Beyonce, but I like the rigidness of the shots in the food server one.

Thanks for the tip. I think I have a bunch of takes of the guy saying 'hey'. So I'm sure I can prolly find one in their that didn't clip.

heheeh ..ahh yes. The girls. That was a tough shoot. 5 hours of watching them dance, telling them to be sexy in certain ways, then jamming the camera right in their face when they do it. Geez! Filming is tough!!

Those were great Corlione! I laughed both times. I like the Beyonce one better (is it the chicks?) but both are good stuff!

Eek!

Ok. So I color corrected these two commercials, according to this small TV monitor I have hooked up to my computer. I displayed Color Bars to ensure that I had it calibrated right. I don't have the remote, so I couldn't calibrate it anyways, but the colors on my DVX screen, and computer screen looked really close to the monitor.

Anyways, I color corrected all the footage. Just took it downstairs and played it on my tv down there. The footage looked really washed out. Like I had the brightness up too high. I know NTSC monitors usually make the footage brighter, but on the monitor I have in my room, it looks perfect.

Could it be my TV downstairs isn't calibrated right.
In writing this, I wanted advice. but now I know what I gotta do. Take the DVX downstairs, hook it up, test to see if my TV down there is calibrated right, if it is, re-correct some footage. And if it isn't.... hope the TVs at the station are calibrated closer to the TV in my room, than the one downstairs.

Dang, it's 3am, and these things are due tomorrow at 2pm.

Are the levels not to high, because if they are, the whites will blow out on a tv. Levels for black 16, for white 235.

Those were both a lot of fun and very professional.

I need to shoot something with dancing girls, as soon as I figure out how to explain it to my wife.

CMessino: enroll in dance class. Tell her you need to take videos for instructional purposes. She gives you any grief, just tell her you're doing it all to become a better dancer for her. And yes, this even works for the strippers.

the first one is better to me color wise. the second is better chicks wise. but both are professional looking.

Thanks for all the compliments. I appreciate all the feedback. (even if it is just about the girls...)

JKL - That was one thing I was worried about. When I was correcting the color, I was checking it on a NTSC monitor, as well checking my histogramand waveform monitor for overexposed stuff. I have no idea if they fall between those numbers, I don't know how to check that.

CMessineo - I teach 6 dance classes a week. Most of them are drop in students in their early 20s. and 90% of them are fit girls. You can do a documentary on me if you want. Follow me around for a week or two. And film my classes...and then the ..er ..progress of my students.   ;)

Darkavenger - I agree with you. Colorwise, the first is better. But the second has that appeal.


Anyways, here are the final versions, I had to submit them today, was up till 3am last night, and woke at 9am to do the DVDs.
I submitted them 4:3 but for the web here I put them in 16:9 and found a cool way to make them look a little more 'film-like'. Improve my chances of getting accepted into Digital Interference.  ;)

A bit to soft and grainy... IMHO the earlier version were better looking.

The funky food server was picked as one of the top 5. They are going to post the top 5 online by wednesday night. Pretty exciting. :)


Encheval - You thought it was a bit too soft? That was a question of mine the entire time. I knew I liked it better than plain video, but how soft to make it? It could have been a touch over, I dunno. The radio station commented on it tho. They said they liked it. 'I don't know..was that a filter or something ... looks great!'

CMessineo - That move on all fours? ...it's called 'The Baby-Maker'
