Fundraising Trailer

Re: Fundraising Trailer

I think that when handled properly, that camera makes some very pretty pictures! :D

Re: Fundraising Trailer

The interview footage is nice looking. Very well done. Damn Hitler was a nut, huh?

Re: Fundraising Trailer

Did you actually get to bring out a Nazi flag and put it on a flagpole? I can imagine the looks on some of the people's faces walking by...

Re: Fundraising Trailer

I liked it. Thought the professor (the guy with the beard) was framed very weird. Just what I saw. Good stuff though.

Re: Fundraising Trailer

Good work ! The choice of Wagner is excellent as well (the music is just a tad too loud sometimes), although it pains me to see his music systematically associated with nazis just because Hitler happened to be a fan... Also, the leading in the last title seemed a bit off (the spacing between the lines doesn't look perfectly even).

Re: Fundraising Trailer

Thanks all.

RE: Sound- no lavalier. I use an AKG C1000 run into the left channel, and off to the side out of frame. You can actually see it in the Hubert Locke shot, although it is off-screen when shown on a TV. I find that it works very nicely. I believe that sound is 90% of decent video.

RE: The flag- yes, there's an interesting story...
We obtained that flag through a person who donated the proceeds to a Holocaust museum in Michigan. It was captured in France in 1944, and is genuine. There are several shots I want to get with that flag, but it is very problematic- how do you fly it to get the shot without really raising eyebrows?? I know of no symbol in the world today that is more universally hated.

The day I got the shot I went to the corner of my house with my DVX. I carefully set up the shot, using an American flag to get the frame right. Then I looked around the neighborhood to see if anyone was outside and watching. With the coast clear, I replaced the American flag with the Nazi flag and rolled tape.

After I finished with the shot, I was looking down attending to something, and I heard my next door neighbor say from his yard, "Well, there's GOT to be a good story to go along with that!" I'm not sure he believed me when I told him it was for a documentary.

RE: Wagner. Yes, I agree. But with the exception of the piece used in the trailer, all the rest of the music I'm using epitomizes the optimism of Germans in 1933. I firmly believe there are parallels between then and now insofar as the way the Church has a go-along, get-along attitude with whatever's going on in society. Two-thirds of the Protestant churches in Germany in 1933 were part of a movement that believed that allying themselves with Hitler was a good church-growth strategy. Hmmm....

Thanks, and looking forward to more discussion.

Re: Fundraising Trailer

Bummer about Kittel. I not only have the abridged dictionary pictured, but the unabridged set as well. However, too many "Christian" German theologians at that time didn't actually BELIEVE the New Testament they so diligently studied (i.e., treated it like one may study Shakesphere or Plato), so their alignment with Hitler was so inconsistent with the religion they supposedly represented. Anyway, the interview shots were great. Well lit and the sound was very good. I'm surprised the mic was off to the side. It worked great.

Re: Fundraising Trailer

Quick comments: I'll agree that the leading in the final title needs a slight adjustment, and add that perhaps the kerning could be loosened for legibility as well. Just my two cents.

The trailer feels very History Channel-esque. Not really sure what the clouds signify, if anything, but I like the use of lots of images and other videos to emphasize and support the interviewees' statements.

Re: Fundraising Trailer

One way to prevent any problems flying that flag for later shoots is to simply design a letter to the surrounding residents informing them that you will be shooting on so and so day and to not be alarmed. Natzi's are not moving in to their neighborhood.

We publish notice in neighborhood papers and pass out flyers notifying neighbors that we will be filming and sometimes it even brings out the press. You never know.

Re: Fundraising Trailer

Very nice job on the interview shots. Good cutaway work. The music bed seems a bit loud sometimes under the interviews. Also, I didn't like the font choice for the title--looks kind of Star Trek-like. The cloud footage was overused--a little bit is fine, but not every other shot. Overall, nicely done.

Re: Fundraising Trailer

Nice trailer and excellent explanation about some of the filming experiences. Thanks for sharing both the video and your comments.

Re: Fundraising Trailer

nice nice nice... gotta love the DVX!

Quick question... wat encoding format is that video in? Is that an MP4? mpeg? What is the actual size of that file?
