GH3 Fun music video shot with GH3 (and GH1 and GH1!)

I'm pretty proud of this music video I directed, shot & edited.
Shot primarily with my GH3. A hacked GH2 was used for a few shots and my old trusty GH1 was dusted off and used for the shot where the truck drives over the camera (I figured if an accident happened, I'd rather not put my GH3 in harm's way).

The Drive-In exteriors were shot at 400 ISO at f2.8 at 1/30th shutter speed. We lit using a 1.2k HMI par, two 575w HMI fresnels and a few Kini Flos.
A cheap, portable LED light was used for fill for the truck interiors and to fill the daylight exterior scenes.

Since the "movie within the movie" was supposed to be an old grindhouse cheapie, I felt a garish, hard fill light would be appropriate, which was great because our lighting budget was very small.

For the Drive-In portions we used a Lumix 12-35mm on one camera and a Canon 17-55mm f2.8 on the other.
For the daytime shots, most were shot with the Lumix 7-14mm.

And I used a Panasonic HPX170 for shots with whip zooms and for the lateral running shots to avoid rolling shutter skew.

Very well done! I liked it and I'm not much of a music video fan, but this one was well worth watching to me. You did fine with the lighting, had a good feel for what was going on.

Thanks for sharing.

The exterior car shots looked really good. Seemed to have a more polished look than the interiors. nice work.

If by interiors you mean the guy in the truck, its probably because there was no way to create a backlight for him given the design of the cab. All the other vehicles had windows and such that allowed us to hit the subjects with a three-quarter backlight. Also, those shots had a bit more scope in that you could see a few cars in the background, etc.

The guy in the truck was keyed with a 4' Kino-Flo, and a second Kino was placed somewhere near the driver's side window as a side/three-quarter backlight. If I needed a bit of fill in the cab, I had a cheap LED light dialed down. It worked great.

But if you mean the performance footage of the band with the audience, that was a time/budget issue. That's actually an exterior stage next to the drive-in theatre. The idea was to have the screen behind them but logistics prevented that. And we didn't have enough lights to reveal the cars at the drive in for that segment. So there's only one shot where you see the screen behind the band. For lighting, I used the existing stage lights as back/top light, and I keyed them with a 575W HMI shot through a 4'x4' frame of 216 diffusion. The band members in the back are a bit underexposed but I think the two singers look pretty good. Not flashy lighting but the band's music style doesn't necessitate flashy lighting IMO.
