FS7: Fun at the airport - Media Credentials and Checked Bags

So I'm having airport fun today.

Thankfully I had a very nice gate agent who was kind enough to not charge me for oversized luggage on my Sachtler Video 20 that I've got along for the ride.

It made me wonder, what's the deal with getting photo credentials that prove that you're a professional video producer, shooter or otherwise? My understanding is that the fees aren't as excessive for those of us who do this for a living.

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks!

I have actually just shown a business card to AA and they have given me the equipment rate. Perhaps it was a kindly gate agent or my Platinum status. Or perhaps my charming personality.

If you belong to NPPA, they offer a photo credential "press pass" that would never get you into a crime scene but no doubt would suffice for the airlines.

Most airlines who honor media rates for excess bags will do so with the presentation of a valid press ID, any press ID.
