Full frame Sony E mount weathersealed A7 price leaked at Samy's Camera for $1,698 !

I'm puzzled to why aren't more people VERY VERY excited about these camera. These are compact FULL FRAME cameras with mic input, headphone jack, full control over video and audio, 24p, 60p, 1080 HD uncompressed and so on.
I've already sold my NEX7 and I'm selling my Canon 6D because my next camera is the A7, babe!

I'm pretty excited about it. The good thing about the E-mount is, you can add an adapter for most any brand of lens. Canon, Nikon, whatever.

I wonder how the video mode performs. Moire, aliasing, etc. With that big sensor and compact body, I'm afraid of over-heating.

edit - OK, I just watched the video of the camera guys in the woods. I did notice some moire on the shoulder bag strap. They never mentioned over-heating, but they were shooting in cooler Canadian climes.
Hmm. Maybe I should sell the FS100 and use the A7.

I'd suggest: wait until you see some in-depth reviews centered on the video image quality. The D600 has a very similar FF sensor to that of the A7 and video is awful. The D800 has a sensor similar to that of the A7r, and video is much better, but still far from the current top performers (at around this price, BMCC and 5D3+RAW). Wait and see.

The best thing is that with this and with the RX10 Sony seems determined to bring out the products that people want. No dragging their feet anymore with evolutionary releases. About time someone did! Let's see how important DSLR video shooters are for them.

It looks great. I would love to get one of these for stills, it's the first camera that seems to target the Leicas.

For video, you get what seems to be the same codec as that of my NEX-5N (read: weak), but you also have clean HDMI out. I'm guessing it's 8-bit 422, so, inconvenient (I prefer to record in-camera) but not bad at all.
What this camera needs is a picture style that can use the whole DR from the sensor. With my new light meter, I've measured DR of my NEX-5N in video mode at 3-above and 7.5-below (6-below if you want it nearly without noise). For stills, I've measured 4-above and 9-below. That's 2.5 stops that are being left on the table because I can't use a picture style that won't crush both highlights and shadows. Put a log profile on this, and that 8-bit 422 external recorder will give the C100 a very tough run for its money.

Considering that the API is open sourced [so to speak], maybe the team at Magic Lantern can get cracking at it for RAW filming?

Thanks vanvideo. Tough to tell much from YT, but the highlight rolloff on the last shots looks great. Doubt that it will be 10bit and undercut the other Sony products, but even still, if it's as good in low light as the fs100, I'll be thrilled. Can't wait to see a video-centric hands on.

AFAIK, only some minor things can be done. Nothing that will change image quality, I think. Have any link where I can learn more about it?

I'd agree, highlight rolloff looks very nice for a stills camera. I think I'm decided on getting one of these... may have to mount the CP.2s to it just for giggles.

Because if the image is anything like in the A99, it doesn't look very good. So there is absolutely zero reason videowise for me to upgrade from the 5dmarkIII. It would actually be a downgrade.

What I am excited about is the stills from the 36mp sensor.

Sony says the A7 sensor is not the same as the A99, nor is the A7r sensor the same as the D800.

I believe it will be pretty much the same.

There is no reason to build a completely new sensor with the exact same amount of megapixels and readout speed. The processing after the sensor is different but most likely won't make much of a difference. They may have made some adjustments to the material to avoid some issues with wide-angle lenses and close lens distance.

Nikon does do some adjustments to the sensors delivered by Sony so they can claim that the sensor is different.

* They always say it's a different sensor, even when it's the same.
* They can differ in small details. Nikon said D7100 sensor and D5200 sensor were not the same, it turned out the only different was the OLPF sensor. For the A7, I think they're saying it is different because the phase-detect AF array is different, but the pixels are actually the same. For the A7r, it may actually be completely different from the D800 sensor, which is made by Sony but Nikon had something to do with designing it, not sure how much.
* Chipworks will clear this out, in time. In particular, checking whether the a7r sensor is different is straightforward, since the D800 sensor doesn't use a standard Bayer pattern. Someone with one of those iphone lens adapters that turns it into a microscope might clear it out, actually.

What do u guys think of a7 + 18-105/4 (apsc) combo for video? Of course with some full frames primes to be added later.

I do 90% stills and 10% video so this small little package looks like the promise land to me. I've read somewhere it can record 4k via hdmi but it was one of these rumor sites.

Cool to see some video samples and that the 16mm works well with no vignetting
