Full control fo GH1/2 through USB?

Hi all,

Do you know if someone was able to fully control this camera through the USB?

I mean a software similar to this:

http://www.photoremote.de/

Unfortunately with the above software a Canon and a Nikon camera its fully controllable but not the GH1.

Have you any suggestion or do you know of any differences on the upcoming GH2?

Thank you in advance

Software to control the GH1(3) via USB would be very helpfull. Maybe Vitaly & Co. could tell us if its at least possible?

One cool feature would be a fokus via Laptop. With the Lumix lenses, controlled by the camera, this should in theorie be possible.
You can not only set the fokus without touching the camera, but also do an accurate fokus pull by pre-programming it.

At this point in time, there is no software like this for the GH1 (as far as I know).

Controlling the camera via USB

I am sure this is possible.
This is how the servicemen are adjusting the camera settings.
But the software is hard to get, unless one has connections with the service center personnel.

This company:

http://www.easydive.eu/eng/leo.php

Produces a universal underwater camera housing (nearly universal)

The concept is simple: Housing apart, they built a small programmable electronic board with a software capable to fully control nearly all the canon and nikon camera.
Unfortunately seems that the GH1 it's not compatible. They will try to see if a new software could be write for the panny camera.

What I do not understand is if the protocol used to control a Canon or Nikon via the USB port is public or they hacked the camera?
Same question for the software wrote by photoremote.de.

Bye

Given that the GH2 is nearly here...
Any news on the possibility to fully control the camera through USB?

Thank you in advance

i am pretty sure canon and nikon make available their SDK to software developers wanting to access the camera in these ways.

i came across a similar thread on another forum and somebody emailed panasonic to ask about this. they replied"

"Thank you for your email.

The Panasonic camera will not support the SDK function (Interconnection between the camera and the laptop) and there are no plans for it in the future from Panasonic.

The only thing you could use is the the remote shutter model DMW-RSL1 and a tripod to avoid any kind of shake.

"Sincerely,

so it looks like the only way to allow this would be through a hack unfortunately. hopefully eventually it can be possible, would be great for anyone wanting to use the g series for stop motion for example.

Reading the email from Panasonic and reading the so many threads about the wrong marketing choice of this brand, what we can say more?

They are just putting so many handicap to their winning horse.

The problem with underwater photography/filmography is that every pro housing is specifically designed for one camera/camcorder. So the best housing makers produce housings just for the same few brand/model.
Years ago an italian housing producer had the idea to use the SDK interface to build a small electronic board and a firmware capable to fully control all the camera with this interface.
So you have one housing that fits many camera.

Panasonic with his choice call itself out of the run so we will never see a GH13 or GH2 producing awesome uw film.

Sad but true.

Unfortunately Panasonic Corporate is largely suicidal, from the outsourced customer service that ranks as one of the worst offenders, to the pseudo English littering the US site. An SDK coupled with visual programing environments and outboard sensors would be abs. incredible for interactive installations.
