Full Aperture control with CPU lenses...

I have a nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens thats AF. I've discovered a way to get full aperature control without getting the "F EE" error, I put a small strip of gaffers tape over the little electrodes and it reads like a non-CPU lens. Now I just tried this once and it worked pretty well but it does seem a little risky.

Am I really doing any irreparable damage to my D90 or lens that I don't realize? Is there an alternative method similar to this? or should I just stop now for my own good?
 
There is an alternative, when in live view, just start changing aperture on the lens, and that's all, and you got manual aperture. No need for crazy hacks. I can do F1.8 to F22 etc.
