FS7: Fujinon announce MK 18-55 T2.9 and MK 50-135 T2.9

From reduser

Just watched the Duclos live stream about the 18-55. He talked briefly that Duclos would be doing an EF mount. He also mentioned that they'll probably have to do away with the macro feature and adjustable back-focus feature to make it work. No other details as of yet.

Edit: I also asked about Helium/Dragon coverage. Matt said that if the EF mount conversion goes as planned, (and take this with a huge grain of salt) then he's pretty sure it can cover 8K FF.

Duclos has led the way a few times to be honest. If he does it and they sell well I imagine Fuji will do it after, like Tokina copying the Duclos cine rehouse.

what..now having BF is a bad thing !!.. I bought the CN7 because it had BF manual adjustment.. guess what the alternative is.. send it off to some distant service centre for a week or take it yourself to a workshop to get tiny shims put in to match only your camera.. at that temperature .. and pay for the day with the lens tech.. no BF manual adjustment is a real liability in the field... if it goes that it.. good night Vienna .. I ,and Im sure many others on this board, have done hundreds of BF adjustments in hotel rooms.. you dont need 4K monitors and charts..
As stated you dont need to set BF everytime you put the lens on your camera.. even pretty extreme temp cha-nges it fine.. I really fear for the future of this craft ..

Exactly. Having back focus adjustment on the lens is a selling point, a plus.

Surely if it's possible - then don't you think Fuji will come out with an EF mount version of them too?

This was my post just a little while ago on this thread in the industry news section.

"At this point, lens and camera manufacturers should be designing and making all lenses and all cameras with user swappable mounts that can be done in the field with a simple turn of the wrist in a few seconds like the FZ mount on an F55 and the aftermarket IBE/AbelCine UMS lens system on certain lenses and optical adapters."

It is possible with Canon CN-E primes but Canon has not as of yet come out with a PL version, despite the demand. And Canon has never come out with a dedicated e-mount version of their L-series / still photography lenses. Despite it being possible, despite there being a need for it.

Duclos may well be able to modify Fuji MK zooms but it will likely be cost prohibitive for most people. The Duclos PL mod of CN-E primes is like $1800 per lens. But even with an additional $2k in cost there will be those who are interested since the total cost is still well under that of many cinema zooms in comparable focal length ranges.

There is the possibility that Fujinon didn't want to cut into their own line of PL-mount cine zooms by making the Fuji MK's available in PL mount. How much better is a Fuji 14.5-45 Premiere in terms of optical performance over a Fuji MK 18-55mm? Is it more than 10x better in optical performance to justify its 10x greater cost? Is the 14.5mm wide end worth another $94,000 over the 18mm wide end? I'm not saying the Fuji MK's would be direct competition for Fuji's Premiere line or even direct competition for the Cabrio's. But I could see where Fujinon would have more of a comfort level with the MK's being e-mount only and as a result a distinct line of lenses separate from their PL lineup.

The 24-105mm is $1100, Speedbooster is $600-700 making it a $1700 - $1800 combo. Why this keeps being mentioned when a proper lens can be purchased for just extra $2000 is beyond me.

How much Greater is the range? I've heard that the s35 equivalent FOV of the 24-105 with speed booster is about 17-75, I certainly use the long end of my 24-105 with speed booster quite often. Is it fair to say that it's about 17-75? Or is it actually a little more like 18-80 and that similar optics are found in the new 18-80 cine t4.4 as the 24-105 f4?

Just wondering really. I feel a strong pull to buy this 18-55, I was really thinking 2017 might be the year I bought the zeiss zoom 21-100, but I don't know if the usability on the wide end would be enough. Certainly nicer having that range though!

Both Fuji's, or one zeiss, i'd probably pick the set of two (can help with that no operator a7s b cam setup for interviews).

This is one of my favorite threads on the board recently, lots of nice proper grown up discussion in here.

You can do the calcs on abel FOV calculator.

75 degrees to 19 vs 63 to 23 or something.

The simple thing is 18 just 'introduces a space' but only just, 17(24) does so adequately, and 75/105 can do a 'nice clean tight head' without invading the space of the subject by bring the camera too close.. 55 cant.

So the difference is both minimal.. and critical. Certainly enough for me not to want it.

I don't think your numbers add up in reality. I bought my 24-105 for $480 used, in very good condition, and that was years ago and it still works great. My speedbooster did indeed cost somewhere around $600 but it's used for all lenses and does something nothing else can do in giving a proper range on many lenses. Not to mention the good IS on the 24-105.

Not that the 24-105 is a great lens by any standard. It's a decent lens with a very useful range, IS and the speedbooster gives it an extra stop of light. So most lenses fades in comparison talking price and features and it's usefulness.

I've used mine on both my FS7 and C100 so many times I've lost count, be it corporate or commercial. Nobody has ever complained about image issues, despite there are in fact a few, but it has allowed me to work fast and efficient.

So to me looking at a lens with a rather short range, like 18-55, my experience tells me I also need another lens to make my shots work. Just like when I'm shooting C100 and Canons 17-55. That lens can't reach far enough in the long end.

Center crop on the fs7 can extend the range of the 18-55 to a faux 35-100 ish lens in 1080. The usability is directly dependant on the sharpness of the lens. I can use my Otus 55 in centercrop without any loss. if the Fuji is sharp enough and from test it seems to be almost as sharp as the Zeiss 21-100 it could be used like that in a pinch. Though it still is only a crop it doesn't change the perspective of the lens.

Not sure how you are calculating this but using the Abel calculator I get:

Based on F55 / F5 sensor size which I believe is the same as in FS7, 16x9 (does not matter really as it shows the difference proportionally)

Canon 24-105mm on speedbooster (x 0.71) : wide end 17mm = 67.2 degrees , long end 74mm = 17.3 degrees
Fujinon 18-55mm : wide end 18mm = 64.2mm degrees, long end 55mm = 23.2 degrees

It is 3 degrees of a difference on a wide end where it really matters, much less than 12 degrees that you stated. Yes, you get longer on long end but personally if I had to choose I'd never ever go with the 24-105mm vs Fujinon 18-55mm. Can you use center crop with 24-105mm without worrying about image quality deterioration caused by the speedbooster? I'd use center scan on 18-55mm without hesitation (yes, I understand it is not available in 4K).

The wide was using a 5d and no booster - actually my first "cinematic" camera - its been all downhill from there on the "mid zoom" front since that combo apart from when I was remted the big canon lens 17-120

Crop mode sharpness? Take a centre crop from a Dslr still with basically any lens and you Wil see that crappy video compression is the main killer in crop mode not the glass

As for actuallu using crop mode - how many buttons does it take to engage? Because 3 seconds downtime is a shot missed on occasion

You never really capture a "moment" on the end of a telephoto lens anyway.
And you usually know that a moment is coming and you are ready for it when it does.
And sometimes you miss something- and that's ok.

Errrrr.... I give up.

Because I compared to a fullframe outdated camera? Simply I started with an EX1 that was not quite wide enough and had plenty of tele. I then went to the 5d/24-105 which offered a nice one lens solution range, after that I migrated to S35 to get a 'proper' camera with XLR ND etc (the PMW_F3) and then the to FS7, and ever since Ive been on the S35 format getting that 'affordable' one lens thing has been a problem. So I dont want hear any crap about FF35 not being a proper relevant format or suchlike.
