FS7: Fujinon announce MK 18-55 T2.9 and MK 50-135 T2.9

What you're describing isn't 'middle range' it's just different. One particular type of gig and one particular type of shooter.

Sure.. but Fuiji want to sell lenses and missed the basic gap in the market.. surely it makes sense to sell into a gap. Admittedly Canon/Sony have kind of filled it themselves now.. I must testdrive the Sony lens and find out how bad it is... I notice there is a six week backorder at CVP

Haven't used the 18-110mm, but if it feels like the 28-135mm, I'd throw it into the Atlantic.

The 50-135mm is a great range for me personally. 2.16lbs is nice as well.

Just like the Zeiss 21-100 that everyone started dissing because they didn't realise that most cine zooms ramp aperture but don't advertise it, these are going to be insanely popular.

There is a reason why a Fuji Cabro 19-90 costs what it costs and maybe it is harder to make the 'one zoom lens to rule them all' lens for a commercially viable price point. Angie 25-250 is £40,000. Zeiss LWZ 15-45 is circa £15,000.

There's never been a better time to buy lenses than right now to be honest. From people wanting AF and IS to people wanting manual cine primes for a song to people wanting cine zooms with proper mechanics without breaking the bank.

I totally see what people want in that Sony lens - again we all have different needs - but not only would it not last 12 months in my line of work being made of plastic, it is not fast enough and not precise enough for me.

The fujis are very tempting but I'm sticking to my lwz.3 which will hopefully ship soon. I want to buy 1 zoom for the next years and be able to switch cameras and the e-mount is a limitation and if I am using a zoom then I simply don't want to have to swap lenses on a shoot.

I too think the Fuji looks like a very tempting offer (although I agree with Icarus that the native e-mount is, ironically, a turn-off), BUT Matt Duclos' main critique of these two new Fujis is the fact that they have Polycarbonate bodies.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! :-(

Hmm that's quite a big point against it. Cheers for bringing it up.

In honesty though I'd never buy a native e mount lens.

They also seem to exhibit more distortion than the Zeiss. Mainly I'm tired of buying new lenses I want to buy 1 zoom with minimal compromise that will live on the next 2-3 camera cycles and be wide enough long enough and fast enough. From all offerings the Zeiss ticks most boxes for a very reasonable price.

Parts of the body of the Fujinons is plastic, but the three rings are metal.

On the upside the plastic housings reduce weight.

The perfect affordable go to lens on my FS7 is Canons 24-105 with speedbooster. That range is just super versatile and I seldom need to use anything else. Until something better appears I'll settle with this lens.

Since when did IS and AF become a prerequisite for professional camera persons.. ??? it used to avoided like the plague .. I shoot doc,s and corps and have never used a lens with either.. or would I want to.. on a Sachtler 18 tripod or hand held..Zacuto universal shoulder plate.. since when has a non IS lens needed O conner heads and a pair of gloves to operate.. whats going on out there ... ?

It is a certain style where probably longer lenses than Normal handheld are used and the shoulder is found to be a bit more natural and 'breathing' than being nailed to sticks but you don't want the full Bourne shake

Personally I don't use is but probably should.

I'm with Sam - can't see the point of these.

Lack of IS the biggest drawback for me - and the need to buy 2 of them, when the new Sony 18-110 offers most of the range, with stabilisation, for half of the price.

And that then leaves more money in my bank account.

Which allows me to have more holidays and more sex with my wife :-)

Ben.

Can't do a multi cam setup with just one lens ; )
