FS7: Fujinon announce MK 18-55 T2.9 and MK 50-135 T2.9

I am really excited about these two lenses. And I've never said that before about lenses.

Sony 18-105 still seems so much more attractive

The 18-55 seems about the same as my speedbooster and 28-85 manual nikkor - a lens that offers manual focus and iris and a macro mode for £150

If one is going two lens surely one would want to start at 16?

Had a twitter spat on this. But I cant see what these lenses really do.. when would you use them.

Clearly they are wonderful in build but the ranges seem odd. Once again we miss the affordable manual 'Reality' lens

-Reality? Following someone around.. you need a single lens 18-100, ideally with IS

-interview with zooms? 35-100

-two cam shoot? 15-35 35-100

Gimbal? 15-35

Conference heads? 70-200

Care about bokeh - shooting some art? use primes probably at T2

So where do these lenses fit?

Holy crap these are amazing for the money.

I could shoot 90% + of everything I shoot with these.

I don't think you can even vaguely compare these with the plastic f4 focus by wire Sonys.

If I was staying Sony I'd be all over these like a rash.

The sigma 18-35 in photo and cine versions if probably the most popular and 'must have' zoom out there at the moment. This gives you another 20mm on the telephoto end making it even more versatile

For Run/Gun i would take the new Sony 18-110 with stabilizer, autofocus etc. and for Cine-Shootings the Sigma Cine 18-35 2.0 Unfortunately those lenses together cost more than my FS7... I am sure this year one of them will be mine. I am just not yet sure which one. The Fuji 18-55 has more range than the Sigma 18-35 but with shooting 4K a little crop shouldn't be a problem.

Yep it seems that the sony and the sigma do their jobs right, the fuji less so.

For run & gun I currently use a 30 year-old Contax Zeiss 28-85mm push pull zoom on a focal reducer with no AF/IS etc and no issues.

The Fujis would deffo be a step up from that :)

Plenty of people are perfectly happy with the Sigma 18-35 as a wide/standard zoom, and I'm sure many would will be happy with the extra 20mm, even at the cost of a stop.

Maybe the lens is not for you, but I can certainly see why they've released it seeing as though a chorus of people on this forum have been wishing for a video-friendly equivalent of the 17-55 2.8 ever since the 7D was released!

I really like the 18-55mm range when shooting 4K for HD delivery. I'd rather have the extra stop of light than the extra range when post punch in or 2k centre crop are options to get a longer shot in a pinch when I can't foot zoom. I don't know if I can justify buying it to replace my nikon 17-55 f2.8. I prefer to use my Sigmas 18-35 and 50-100 because of better mechanics so maybe a high quality 18-55 might replace both 17-55 and 18-35 and sell to cover almost half the cost of a the new lens. hmm.

I'm with Sam - can't see the point of these.

Lack of IS the biggest drawback for me - and the need to buy 2 of them, when the new Sony 18-110 offers most of the range, with stabilisation, for half of the price.

And that then leaves more money in my bank account.

Which allows me to have more holidays and more sex with my wife :-)

Ben.

Not to beat a boring drum but there's squillions of people who never ever use IS or AF and just want a great all manual lens.

But those people are shooting pointless art on dslr primes or scripted drama on Oconnor heads with cine zooms

(both legit activities)

The middle range commercial OMB needing to bash off 'Introduce, Show, Examine" three shot sequences on time and on budget is left sorely short of options.

..the same people who actually have 3g sitting here right now for the right thing.

What you're describing isn't 'middle range' it's just different. One particular type of gig and one particular type of shooter. Of which there are a multitude.

The amount of people running around with Sigma Cine zoom 18-35s and 50-100s at the moment without even a shoulder rig but handholding 8K Reds for all manner of amazing promo and commercial jobs is mind-boggling. And most of those poeple will have never ever seen a cine head in their lives. A movi, yes. An easyrig, definitely.

I personally genuinely don't often put anything past 85mm on my camera. If I could shoot everything at 21mm, 28mm and 35mm I would :)
