Fuji X-T3 released

Can someone refresh my memory with the Rec601/HDMI data levles issue outputting to a Ninja V ?
Was that ever corrected in the new firmware ? Where are things with that today ?
What was the workaround ?

I definitely see the additional contrast on my Ninja V in Flog. But I am still running old X-T3 firmware (never updated to avoid the twitch focusing issues).
If I remember correctly, the extra contrast is on the monitoring, so the scopes/tools are not trustworthy, however the actual footage itself has the correct levels ?

As far as I know, there has been no change in the REC601 output, nothing in the FW update features changed, so therefore no change on working with the Ninja V.
I've never used the Ninja V with the X-T3 but others report that the blacks appear to be massively crushed and the whites appear blown out because of the mismatch.

This REC601 mismatch, combined with the weight, drive expense, fan noise when shooting interviews in small quiet rooms have led me to only record internally with the X-T3, I don't
think using the Ninja V with it is worth the hassle at all. FCP X converts to ProRes on ingest so no reason for us to shoot ProRes.

So now the latest is that the X-T4 uses the same sensor as the X-T3. So the X-T4 will simply be an X-T3 with IBIS and flippy screen. Not too surprising but nothing get excited about if you already own an X-T3.

Depends if they improve the video recording specs. I'm holding out hope for a 10-bit 4k 4:2:2 internal recording option (to match the S1H). That would eliminate any hesitations with recording internally for me, especially since my new Mac Pro 5,1 build has had it's Radeon VII GPUs hacked to provide hardware accelerated encoding and decoding of h264 and h265 video (my previous machine with a Titan X couldn't play XT-3 h265 footage at all, the new ones can play it back like butter).

Nothing has been fixed. Workaround for Resolve is to set data levels to full for each clip. See https://youtu.be/bwFRWWNSFlY

Fuji is pretty conservative. It would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

They were anything but conservative when they actually started to focus on the video aspect. Loaded up the X-T2, T3 and H1 for the time.

(Some in fact may say too much to the point of upsetting their peers.)

I mean I would love IBIS as long as its GH5 like and not XH2 like. I don't care about a flippy screen. The battery life is honestly the biggest incentive for me to get an XT4. Maybe they'll go all out on the XH2.

I was out of the loop, but just got a Mixpre3ii and it looks like they added a Fujifilm timecode option!

That's very cool. One of the annoying things about the X-T3 was the inability to jamsync even though it had TC.
Have you tried it on the X-T3 yet ?

I no longer have access to an XT3.

However, the firmware for the Fujifilm Timecode should work with the original Mixpre mk1 series, as well. Just have to update to 5.0 firmware or something. I was just seeing all of that in passing. Makes the XT3 and Mixpre mk1 combo very cool now.

With all these recent camera announcements, wanted to show Fujifilm and its color science some love. Makes it even more exciting what they can come up with the upcoming videocentric XH-2. What realistic features(shall I say game changing?) and improvements do you see Fujifilm implement in the XH-2?

The X-T4 just came out so based upon the past, we won't see the X-H2 until next year, at the earliest, unless they go rogue with their release schedule. Honestly, between the X-T3 and X-T4, I'm not sure how they would differentiate an X-H2? it's a bigger body so it shouldn't have the X-T4 overheating issues. Possible they could try for 6K recording?
Possibly 4:2:2 color space? I'd be surprised to see them attempt an internal RAW like the R5, but it's possible. It will still be an S35 sensor so most of the brainwashed masses will dismiss it as subpar because it's not "Full Frame". I'd be super excited if they just put a damn HDMI Type A connector in it. Micro HDMI keeps me awake at night, I'm always worried
about if someone trips over a cable with one of my three X-T3s when we are live streaming. I only have a cage and cable clamp for one of the cameras and even with those, I've seen others who have still managed to destroy the micro HDMI connector because it's about as robust as Balsa Wood.

Strategically, if they are even going to do an X-H2, I think they need to go all out because if it's just an X-T4 in a bigger body for more money, why not just get an X-T4? 6K 4:2:2 10-bit would be a start. Better AF and IBIS, the AF on our X-T3s and the X-T4s is spotty, often usable, but sometimes terrible. You really have to keep an eye on it when you use it. It's still a lot
less reliable than the R5/R6/A7 SIII AF systems. Bigger battery for longer run times, no recording limits would be nice. A freaking video waveform display would almost make me buy the camera just for that feature. Histograms are garbage for video. I strongly dislike false color. Give us a damn video waveform monitor like a real camera. Some kind of mini XLRs like the Pocket 6K
has would be amazing.

The one they should do but doesn’t show on a spec list so probably not their first priority: world class AF
The one I wouldn’t care about but that has a fair chance of happening: 6k
The one I would want but is very unlikely: internal BRAW

Well what's concerning is the rumor mill has mentioned the IMX671AQR as the likely sensor in the X-H2 and some future A7000 camera from sony.
I say concerning because 8k or 4k high frame rates and fast readouts on small cameras doesn't appear to be a good mix.
Assuming the IMX671AQR is even real and not someone with to much time on their hands conjuring up a fake leak, I hope the X-H2 is not released until there's a reliable way to keep it cool or use all the same technology but in a lower res sensor to help with heat related issues.
I know camera and sensor developments are years in the making so it maybe too late but hopefully Fujifilm is seeing what happened with all the overheating issues on recent camera announcements and makes the necessary adjustments if needed.
Obviously the AF needs some work.

True! My bets as someone who sold their beloved X-T3 and is not trying to decide whether to buy an X-T4 or wait for X-H2:

1. External raw (since GFX100 already has it)

2. The current X-T3 sensor is the Sony IMX571BQR. Sony supposedly has a new sensor specced - the IMX671AQR. Seems a logical successor, no?
8K, 43mp sensor with fast readout... it could either be on the X-H2 or X-T5. If it's in the X-T5 but not the X-H2, I think the X-H2 buyers will be pissed!

3. Maybe longer runtime than X-T4

4. Headphone jack!

There are many other things I'd hope for but am not expecting. I agree with your list and here are some things I'd add to your (excellent) list:
- custom user LUTs like Panasonic S1H (Fuji responded to this request saying it might be possible at some point)
- raw out to USB-C like Sigma FP
- better remote control so I can pull focus on a Fuji electronic lens
- 3:2 and anamorphic modes like Panasonic S1H
- higher-res EVF like Sony a7s3
- proper timecode in / out
- fix the damn exposure pop effect when I adjust the zoom on my top-of-the-line Fuji 16-55 2.8 zoom (why?!?!)
- audio adapter like the one for the Sony a7s3 that adds 4 channels, with XLR and phantom and that you can reposition
- I'd kill for an EVF you can reposition (eg with a cable)
- lens metadata sent out via HDMI or HD-SDI for integration on virtual sets (haha yeah right, they won't do that)
- genlock (haha, nope they won't do that either)
- use the image stabilization to enable multi-shot high-res stills like Sony a7r4

I agree but also remember that a smaller sensor is easier to cool. I think the number of pixels and readout speed affects it - but perhaps number of pixels doesn't matter as much as sensor area. That's why our cellphones don't explode when shooting 4K 60p or even 8K. Sure, they get hot but if the thing causing overheating was resolution divided by sensor size, those Samsung 8K phones would melt after you record 10 seconds.

I agree with you that I do hope Fuji pays attention to overheating and does some good design work - may be a bit late but Sigma FP and S1H seem pretty solid and they both use a Sony sensor like Fuji does. S1H even does full 3:2 readout of the entire sensor and stays cool.

The good news is that it if you keep resolution and quality constant, it seems to improve every generation :) I remember when worring about 1080p overheating on my Sony NEX-5N or putting ice packs on a RED ONE!

The 26mp Fuji X-T3 was pretty good at not overheating in high quality 4K 24p mode (supersampled from a 6K readout, right?). The X-T4 was a little worse because of the image stabilization, but still, progress is being made. Also Sigma FP is pretty admirable in its cooling design!

Maybe the X-H2 will be able to rock out binned / line-skipped 4K 60p from that 8K sensor that still looks good without a sweat - which would be an improvement!

RE: the Canon R5, Canon has always had issues with their sensor power efficiency and readout speeds. Look at the battery life on the R5. Look at how bad the crop was for their 4K cameras before. As for the Sony a7s3, I think they are reading out a dual-gain quad-Bayer setup to give it the latitude (yes I believe that 48mp quad bayer -> 12mp spec sheet floating around now), so I think it's doing a lot of work under the hood.

Agreed I'm not making any bets on any full-readout 6K or 8K anamorphic modes or whatever on an X-H2!

As far as overheating, why aren't Canon, Sony and Fuji just backwards engineering the S-1H!?! Put a freaking fan in the camera, just do it right so it's not noisy and it's weather resistant and everyone will be happy. No one takes a tape measure out to measure every mm of a new camera body
but all of the maufacturers seem to think users do that. We care a lot more about a camera than we can shoot with at max raster and resolution all day than saving 2 ounces and few mm of body size. Get a clue camera manufacturers. I hate to say it but the R5/6 seem to be shaping up as
a debacle for Canon. It already is affecting their brand name that they made the new "overheating camera". Bad press. Canon, I know you know how to make a mirrorless hybrid with a fan. Panasonic did it, why do you refuse to?

The Fuji 50mm f/1.0 is out and it's big and heavy and expensive but in all cases not as much as I expected. $1500 and 845g.

Considering a used EF 50mm f/1.0, if you could even find one for sale, is in the $3,000.00 range, I don't know if it's fair to call a $1,499.00 AF f/1.0 prime "expensive". Seems cheap for what it is.
Completely unnecessary addition to the lineup. They should be working on an XF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS and some 300mm-500mm primes. Think about the XF lineup, they have a lot of
wide angle choices, the mid range is completely covered and they have plenty of short tele primes and zooms. What they are missing are more companions to the 200mm f/2.0 but longer.
Anyone coming from Canon or Nikon would see those as the real holes in the lineup if you shoot sports, wildlife and nature.

Well, it's a $1500 APS-C lens so yes I'd say it's expensive, though indeed it could have been A LOT worse, I was definitely expecting >$3k. My 25mm f/0.95 for m43 was $500, it seems being designed for smaller sensors with short focal flange distances really helps keep costs down.

And I agree that a good 56mm f/1.4 could have filled the gap, but everybody was telling me the old version was bad so the gap was there.
