Fuji GFX100 medium format, ATOMOS, 12 bit ProRes RAW!

Stunning medium format footage by Rodney Charters ASC.

Rodney is such a cool dude! I worked with him on "24" for a few years. Super talented DP.

The footage from the Fuji w ProRES RAW looks beautiful. I hope they also make it available for the X-T3 and X-T4,
that might make me actually buy a Ninja V, as much as I dislike external recorders. Being an FCP X user, the appeal of ProRes RAW
with FCP X would be pretty nice. The Fuji color science is amazing, that's why I like my X-T3s better than most of the other mirrorless,
it just has a little something special to skin tones and overall look that the Sony, Panasonic and Canons lack. From what I can tell, the
color science is the same between the X-Trans 4 sensor and the GFX sensor, it's just a larger version.

Some of those sunset shots were really nice. But did anyone else feel like that first shot of that guy twirling his hair like a nervous HS/college girl was the most awkward and uncomfortable thing they’ve seen in a while?

And Fuji, even though they have PLENTY of real estate on this ginormous camera, STILL could not see fit to put at least a full sized HDMI connector on it.

SMDH.

Gorgeous colors and feel to the footage. Rolling shutter seems a bit slow?

Hard pass on spending this much for a mirrorless camera, especially when it renders all my lenses useless. Could make a nice rental

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a sample unit to test out soon. I think the biggest question remains - how are they deriving the 4k image from the 100mpx sensor? Moire and aliasing could be an issue (though I was looking, and struggled to see to any in that footage - possibly some funkiness in people's hair in close-ups?).

The micro-HDMI port is crazy (especially since the body itself is so large). I'll definitely pop it side-by-side with my X-T3s to see how they compare.

Side note - what's with all the people who say that full-frame is overhyped getting buzzed about medium format?

Not me, I find little exciting about medium format video. But the way our colleagues have responded to FF brainwashing the past three years, it wouldn't surprise me to soon see statements to
the effect of, "FF video is so 2020, we HAVE to buy medium format sensor cameras now to be the cool kids". I'd be much more excited if Fuji and Atomos allow this on the X-T3 and X-T4.

A lot of Sheeple in our business.

Agreed. The XT3 sensor is the perfect size for video acquisition.

I had to get rid of it the 2nd time I had to return it to Fuji because the flimsy micro HDMI port ripped out.

The main reason I've been kind of wanting to go to full frame for video it's just to get a little more shallow depth of field reach with my mommy at 645 glass haha. Sometimes f2.8 doesn't cut it.

For me this cameras been interesting but more of the photo side of things and even then they'll probably just stay a rental item for the few shoots where they really want as many megapixels as possible. Still would like to get my hands on one to compare how well the files play and capture one vs The A7R.

In RAW output mode, 4K is derived from 3x3 pixel-binning, it's pretty much moire/aliasing free but soft, hence requires some sharpening in post.

It sounds like I'll have my test unit arriving the week after next. Is there anything in particular anyone would like me to test out?

Unfortunately Fuji don't have a PL-mount for it, so I can't try it out with regular cinema glass (which would make NDs/mattboxing a lot easier).

Lensrentals posted a GFX100 teardown. That microHDMI connector is soldered directly to the mainboard, if it breaks you're in for a very expensive repair. I would live in fear if I plugged anything there.

Also the weather sealing is not stellar so don't count on it saving your camera if it gets wet. It may or may not save it.

RE: medium format and DoF: you're not getting shallower DoF on one of these than you could get on FF. There's reasonably-priced f/1.2 glass for FF, but AFAIK the fastest GF lens Fuji makes is f/2. The way to get really shallow DoF on this camera is to get an adapter and use the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art, which actually covers this sensor, but I don't see many people doing that (and it would still be just as expensive and not as shallow as getting a 50mm f/1.0 or f/0.95 lens on FF).

Maybe you could get shallower DOF at equivalent resolution/IQ? But yes I agree. You dont need to go MF for DOF.

And generally, I feel like FF for stills lenses and S35 for cine lenses are the best formats to work with because of the plethora of varied and high quality lens designs and the economy of scale at which they're produced (plus the vintage options available).

Here's the Fuji 110 f/2 MTF:

Here's the 85mm Otus f/1.4 which has a similar DOF, FOV and is about 20% more expensive:
