Fuji 2x vs. Standard

I guess the topic says it all. I am curious how the benefits of the 2x hold up against the price difference (approx. $3400). Are there any quality differences between the two? I appreciate any feedback!

Well, it's an extra bit of glass when it's in-line, so there's definitely a hit in speed... a couple stops at least (not sure exactly how much). I *think* (totally subjective here) that's it also makes it a bit softer. But, it's only there when you put it there, and it doubles your zoom, so, if think you might ever need it, it's worth it's $$$.

I have both. To my unscientific eye, when the 2X is disengaged, I see zero discernible difference between the 2 lenses. And to be honest, I don't see any degradation when it *is* engaged - but I have nothing else of equivalent focal length to compare it too either.

One note - you really need rock-solid sticks to get a steady shot with the 2X engaged or you will see even the most minute movement.

But overall, I am very happy with both lenses.

I originally ordered the Canon with my camera but needed to start shooting in July, so I changed to the Fujinon w/o the extender and have never regretted it. It is a solid feeling well made lens and the picture holds up beautifully through the zoom range. Yeah, it breathes quite a bit, but all zooms do, and I don't find it worse than film lenses I'm used to like Angenieuxs and Cookes. If you don't want breathing, pay way more or use primes... and realistically how often do you rack focus in a situation where you can't compensate somehow for the breathing?

If you handhold a lot I recommend the lens without the extender because weight and balance are everything... in my case I've even switched to my old Chrosziel 3x3 matte box because it's much lighter than the 4x4, especially with filters.. Luckily it just covers that lens w/o vignetting...
