FS700 - Ugly Noise

A thought: rather than spending $10K on a prosumer camera, why don't you spend $13K on the Red Scarlet? The difference in image quality, peace of mind, flexibility and amount of time you won't spend worrying about weird image noise is worth far more than the extra $3K.

Because $13k for a Scarlet won't get you jack s*%t.

The cheapest Scarlet package they offer is $16k and it would allow you to shoot for about 60 minutes (30 minutes per Redvolt). But don't worry you'll fill your 64GB Redmag before that.

A Scarlet package that I could use all day would set me back $20-25k easy (not including lenses)

On the other hand a FS700 package that I could use all day would set me back around $10k (with the kit lens).

Also there is no "peace of mind" with the Scarlet or the Epic from what I've heard. And the time you don't spend worrying about weird image noises will be easily replaced and exceeded by the amount of time you will spend waiting for your footage to transcode/render.

Unless you get a faster computer which would set you back another $5-10k. ($5k alone for the red rocket card)

So yeah go ahead and get that Scarlet for $13k. :badputer:

:-Happy(DBG): (Yeah I was going to get a Scarlet once)

Easy guys, this wasn't shot at 3200.

I'm sure that guy set the 700 to 3200 ISO, according to the available light he got there.
What he didn't know is, that in Super-SlowMo, the 700 takes over the ISO and shutter, to make sure, it get´s enough light and speed.

So if you need to set the 700 to 3200, you can be sure it was pitch dark there.
With a Phantom, one would need to bring about 4k HMI, to a shot like that.

So from that flick, I would say, he forced the 700 to crank up the ISO to the max.
No wonder it´s noisy like that.

Frank

I knew it! Thank you, Frank!

Wait, I could control the shutter just fine at 240fps.

Was it locked on other pre pro cameras? You can't lower it, but you can certainly raise it.

...and you shouldn't be able to lower it less than it needs to be to actual record that framerate.

There are about 5 of those hand build pre production models out there. From what I can see, they are not all the same.
Like Philip's camera is resetting all the PP when you turn it of - the one that I had, did not do that.

None of them had the final firmware - so I guess we have to wait, till the production models are out there.

Good point about the kit price. I stand corrected.

However, the post workflow doesn't quite work like I think you think it does. With RED footage you edit using proxies which take about 30 seconds to make (each clip is usually less than 1 MB). Then you only conform the footage you need once your edit is locked (usually through RedCine which also doesn't take long). A lot of DSLR guys immediately try to 'Log and Capture' all the R3D files and complain that it takes 3 years per clip.

No your right I'm sure there are much faster workflows then the one I explained. I was just going from the experience I've had with the few test R3D files I've played with on my MBP.

And also reading back on my post, I was a little harsher then I intended to be so I hope I didn't come across as being an ass. Sorry about that.

I toss around the the idea of getting a Scarlet over the FS700 at least once a week and always come back to the horrible conclusion that It's wayyy to expensive for me... :crybaby:

Not at all. And I agree with you. As someone who rents most of our gear I often forget what it takes to put a package together.

If it makes you feel any better, the current build of Scarlet is still super buggy. A lot of rebooting on set. Definitely needs a dedicated DIT.
