FS700 + R5 test request for artifacts in HFR

Does anyone out there have an FS700 with an R5 set up that could conduct a very quick test please?

I have the 7Q and when I'm shooting very high contrast situations, I and other users are getting weird artifacts on high contrast edges. I want to establish if this is an FS issue or a 7Q issue.

I only have this problem when I'm shooting HFR @ 2k from 100fps to 240fps. I get the worst results in backlit situations where the light meets the object. So sun flaring in particular. The high contrast edge is sharp. If it's soft, the artifact doesn't show up.

If anyone out there would be able to run a quick test with the R5 or already has footage that shows this problem using the R5, that would be great. That way we'll know it's an FS issue.

Thanks

I thought this was mainly an internal codec issue and was gone in 4K raw and 4KtoHD on the 7Q?
But it's still there in the 2K raw at HFRs?

HFR 2K has bad issues and are clearly visible as worse than normal 1080p even in internal AVCHD files.

Not sure about the contrast issue at hand, but it has its quirks. Definetly not a high budget slow motion machine.

its a 2k issue from the sensor, the f5 and f55 would display the same type of issue in 2k but they have an OLPF to combat it unlike the fs700. Most of your higher end cameras have them, why the fs700 doesn't is beyond me.

To get this in perspective, the slow mo isn't terrible by any stretch. I shoot 80% of my work in HFR and thus far have had no complaints from my clients. I'm currently on a shoot with Red Bull and they are happy with what they have seen. I see these artifacts on about 1% of my shots but the artifacts seem random, as in no consistency. There aren't too many cameras out there shooting 240fps @ 2k, so let's count our blessing there.

I would however like to find some kind of fix if possible. But in order to do that, I need to be 100% sure that it's the FS and not the 7Q. I'm pretty sure it is the the FS.

FYI, this is only an issue from 2k raw HFR. Anything that derives from a full 4k sensor scan (such as 4k2hd) is impeccable. In fact, I'd personally say it compares to ProRes from the Alexa. Just sayin' :)

Hey Prendi,

I know from shooting tons of AVCHD 120 and 240 that there is a LOT of artifacting. Not sure if the 7Q makes it better as lately I've been shooting mostly scripted stuff at regular frame rates.

If you go to my vimeo page, there's several 7Q tests - Winter's Day and Crimson and Clover - that uses a lot of 120 and 240 2K RAW and it looks pretty good to my eye. Less artifacting than the AVCHD codec, or I might be imaging that.

R5 will show the same artifacts as O7Q, its the compressed signal from the camera but much less than onboard debayered avchd-slowmotion (which is very soft and bad). F5/F55 should not compress the signal to R5, but the recorded mxf is compressed. 4K 120fps looks much better, compared it already with the Epic Dragon.

I know your Vimeo page pretty well. It was crimson and clover that convinced me to buy the FS700 and 7Q set up :) I was just about to throw down on an Epic the week before but then I watched that...

The artifacts are still there. Maybe not as bad but they bug me, as they pop up so randomly and sometimes they're really noticeable.

This is pure speculation but I wonder if it's something to do with line skipping + the weird shutter speeds on the FS? Could it be they are out of sync and therefore cause these odd stripes?

This is an incorrect statement.

The FS700 does have an OLPF installed. It is a filter designed for the 4K resolution of the sensor. A similar OLPF is on the F5 and F55 cameras. However those cameras also have the option to swap out the standard OLPF with another one which is designed for the resolution change when sampling the 4K sensor down to 2K, effectively turning a block of four photosites into one larger one. This OLPF option is not available on the FS700.

Separately, the way the FS700 derives 2K from the 4K sensor is different than on the F5 and F55. Those cameras have more powerful processors qnd can computer using more data at any one time. The FS700 has to throw away resolution data in order to keep up with the frame rate.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Mitch. So really theres no sense having a 2k OLPF for the fs700 since it wouldn't matter much due to the fs700s processor. Got cha, Thanks
