FS700 + Odyssey7Q: my first short test...

I was lucky enough to test a sample of the new Odyssey7Q 2K and 4K recorder with my Sony NEX-FS700, the best way to achieve 2K and 4K images from this camera.
Camera: Sony NEX-FS700
Recorder: CD Odyssey7Q
Lenses: Nikon 14-24 mm. f/2.8
Nikon 80-200 mm. f/2.8
Grading: DaVinci + Colorista II
Editing: Premiere Pro CC

A very special thanks to Convergent Design, Sony Europe and Cristina Marchionni

Thanks for watching!

I guess you were shooting in 2K at maybe 240fps (or the equivalent in PAL)?

EDIT: nevermind. you texted it at the start of the video haha!

Nice work... very beautiful setting, camera work and model.

Hi Filippo, very nice video. Thank you!

Can you possibly speak a bit about what the footage was like to grade? Perhaps comparing it in latitude and colour information to say a Red Scarlet/Epic?

I'm excited about the Q7.

Very nice video but the only way to really evaluate it is to see original video and all the PP settings. Can you upload a couple of clips directly from the Odyssey 7Q with the PP settings? That would be a big help. Thanks.

Thanks for posting this, some lovely footage.

How do you think it all looks, you're up close to it. It's difficult to tell subtlety over vimeo. I downloaded the 1080p mov but still lots of compression banding.

On the wide forest shot i think i can see speckled noise, like aliasing noise in the trees. Quite obvious but i don't know if that's in the original? It actually reminds me of a problem with DNxHD in highlights but i presume this was all ProRes?

It would be wonderful if there was a way to post a frame or two from different parts (especially that part).

I understand this has nothing to do with the O7, this is about what the 2K out of the camera is like!

As for the PP questions i assume this is Linear RAW setting, so the profiles shouldn't affect it - was that the case?

cheers
Paul

Hi all,

many thanks for your comments.
Here are two Odyssey7Q 2K DNG frames http://www.hightail.com/download/OGhkOGNmYWI0b0FzeHNUQw
From Convergent Design: "When recording raw from the FS700 must be in Slog 2, since to a degree this is baked into the file (similar to Canon Cinema Raw)... Since as of CS6 and CSCC the have removed their Cinema DNG engine, and are implementing a much improved support in the next Adobe CC update (October 2013).
You must view / edit the files with any of the following, Davinci Resolve, FCP X, or Assimilate".
My Friend Paolo Baccolo (Adobe Guru) showed me the new Adobe CC: it's fantastic!

Filippo...Convergent Design...I'm speechless...thank you so much for doing this too!

I've been grading the DNG files you provided in LightRoom - they're so flexible! Great dynamic range too! Amazing! Time to start saving every penny!

Filippo, thank you. If it's not too much hassle could we see one with wide forest and the light through the trees. About 49 seconds in?

thanks!
Paul

What the Heck? How is it possible that this looks so nice? From all the recent threads one would be under the impression that S-Log & 2K RAW is borderline useless, aliased, low dynamic range mediocrity.

Yet, every time I see the 240fps down sampled 2K RAW on the FS700 or F55 (similar down sample process I'm assuming), I think it looks great! Thanks Filippo for giving the pixel peepers on this forum a small glimmer of hope :)

Any photos of the 7Q on the FS700?

What's the "lowest profile/smallest footprint" that can be achieved with the 7Q and FS700; I've seen a few pictures with the 7Q mounted on top of the FS700's handle - is there any other way to mount it where it's not so high?

Okay, so what am i doing wrong? I took the DNG into resolve and this is what i saw. I could see mosquito noise on the main vimeo 1080p quicktime as well (on her left shoulder). But this edge problem must be a debayering issue?

But even on this one to one if you look at her shoulder there's some obvious aliasing there.

I've tried futzing around with the Cinema DNG settings, changing the colour space and i can minimise the colours on her right shoulder but not get rid of them.

I must be using old software perhaps - is there a recommended way to debayer this?

(EDIT: some of this is down to resolve using a 1080p timeline with the 2K source. That's the horzontal sharp steps every now and again)

If you wanna see some pictures of my camera with the Odyssey7Q and the R5, take a look here http://www.filippochiesa.eu/?p=1307 (I took the one with the Odyssey at IBTS Show in Italy and I took the other one with R5 at my office).
@Paul: I used the old DaVinci version. Please consider that, at this time, there's currently no softwares that can correctly debayer this. Try with BMCC settings.

Hope this helps.

Well i've tried FCP X as well (takes it in but the debayer is quite blurry, the noise is still there but better and masked by the softness - i'm not sure how to change DNG settings in FCPX). The coloured noise around her shoulders is very odd. It looks like compression artefacts and i saw them quite clearly in the 1080p version on vimeo even at normal viewing distance. It's not lens CA, it's a very digital noise.

Before i draw any conclusions i need to make sure i'm doing the right thing though. I am using v9 of Resolve. Setting it to BMD film certainly helps with that edge a lot, it's quite soft and i see halos around her, but if i dial in some contrast then the artefacts become clearer. The stair stepping around her right arm and her exposed left shoulder are quite pronounced.

May i ask, the SLog setting seems odd. Sony say the RAW output is Linear and that the PP doesn't affect it. But it appears that this isn't the case?

Is the DNG compressed i wonder, how could i tell?

cheers

I didn't even notice that fringing? Haha. I guess I don't look that close - I don't think most people do to be honest? Could be some chromatic-aberration though...

Anyway, here's my grade (made in Lightroom 4.4):

The thing that really stuck out to me was the fact that the overexposed direct sunlight shot looked grey due to the whites being pulled down so far. I'm guessing that an issue that can be solved with grading though.

Consider that the Odyssey sofware is not the final one and also consider that when you use the FS700 in super slow motion it's just a little bit noiser than the normal settings (the same results with the R5).
I think we gotta wait the final release and the new Adobe CC (I assure you that it's fantastic).
