FS700, Odyssey 7Q mounted with Edelkrone EVF/monitor holder

We picked up a couple of Edelkrone EVF/Monitor holders (https://www.edelkrone.com/eu/p/115/monitor-holder) primarily to mount an EVF to our FS700 cameras, however we found it also works nicely with the Odyssey 7Q.

It's a simple design, reasonably rugged, attaches to an available cold shoe mount on the camera, and then to a 1/4" on your monitor/EVF. The arm rotates around the central block allowing you to adjust the monitor position, you can adjust the tension in the arm by unscrewing/screwing three allen keys on the block.

We bought ours from ProAV in the UK, just £115 ex VAT, so a bargain compared to most monitor solutions.

Monitor in inverted mode (ready for the new firmware ), useable as shoulder mount or on the sticks. The cable routing is also better this way, power cable is kept nice and close to the arm and the SDI cable feeds upwards, so out of your way when adjust focus, iris etc

Monitor rotated by 90 degrees'ish

The monitor holder is shown attached to the top cold shoe on the handle, you could also mount it to the front cold shoe if you wanted to push it further forward.

Monitor rigged in upright position... the cables are a little more messy this way IMHO

Stuart,

this looks interesting. Is it possible to position the monitor further back though? It seems that there's no travel beyond where the hotshot is on the 700? I would find that position for handholding on a shoulder too close for my eyes.

At the moment i'm using an arm that i can angle and position further out and have the arm going into the side mount of the monitor. It works okay, but one nice thing about your set up is the monitor is forced to be horizontal and is fixed that way, right?

cheers
Paul

There's a slider bracket on the EVF holder which allows you to push it forward

This is as far foward as the monitor will go on the top cold shoe, you could also mount to the front cold shoe and get a bit further

It's close, although manageable for me (if I wear my glasses!). One issue in this configuration, the monitor does get very close to the lens, so you're limited on how low you can drop it.

Looks very good Stuart ;) i just bought one cheap magic arm, just for some basic shooting, but that looks like a good solution.

Stuart,

Did you modify your movcam rig to move the shoulder pad onto the rails? Mine is attached further forward and not on the rails. If i can get it on the rails i can get the cam further forward for the screen. Sadly weight all forward as well, aside from a little vlock over my shoulder.

cheers
Paul

Yep, we've added a horizontal cheese plate, attached the shoulder pad to that. Weight is further forward, but we can balance that with v-locks at the back.

That's interesting. I bought the Edelkrone one for the Alphatron and I tried to use it for the 7Q too. From my experience the rod is a little to short and you have to put the odyssey quite to the end of the rod. Also if you want to use it for shoulder mount it is still close to the body, it should more move to the lens.

I also thinking to build the odyssey 7Q with edelkrone evf holder. How does it look like if mount to the front cold shoe? Cause it is a bit too near to the body if use on shoulder.

For those who having odyssey7Q with edelkrone evf holder, what is your exeperience? any cons? like will the 7Q being too near to the lens or even wil distract some "big fat" size lens?

as I wrote above. The rod is quite short, it fit's so-so imho, not much space to play with. Also if you dont use the handle with front shoe it's to close to the camera body. Not my choice for 7Q mount - but your mileage may vary

Yep, it is close... I'll have a play (next week), see what size the rod is, how easy it would be to swap it out for something longer and gain a bit of distance.

it's standard 15mm but has an extra thread at the end for a screw to fix it.
i tried a 15mm rod when I first got my hands on it, it wouldn't fit (could've been a brain burp on my part), I'll try again when I'm back at home... The supplied rod's secured using a grub screw, so not really great.

I've also fired off an email to Edelkrone to see if they'd do some updates specifically for FS700 7Q combo, I'd expect it would be a popular option if tweaked a bit.

One thing I can say thou is to watch out for Edelkrones support.. Im having a really hard time getting my edelkrone stuff fixed... they answer 1 out of 10 emails ive sent and I have gotten nowhere..

Hello Stuart,

Unlike the 3rd party companies, as edelkrone we are always tend to design universal equipment for filmmakers. In this case Monitor/EVF Holder could carry up to 9" Monitors comfortably. But as the time pasts new Monitors has connection threads in different locations. Anyway we will share this feedback with our design and engineering team. Thank you for your feedback.
