FS700 high speed frame rate to save as

I usually save my high speed to 29.97, FX I think it is... the highest one up. Is there a benefit to saving to any other format? Like 60fps? Better quality?

The conformed frame rate should match the rest of your project. So if you're shooting normal-speed footage at 30fps, in most cases you'll want to save your high speed shots at 30fps as well so everything edits together properly.

The conformed frame rate also determines the playback speed (how slow your slow motion is.) If you shoot at 240fps and save it as 30fps, you'll end up with footage that is 1/8th realtime speed. If you save it as 60fps, it'll be 1/4, and so on.

Quality will be effectively the same regardless of the frame rate. You could choose a lower bitrate AVCHD setting (like FH mode) for lower quality in exchange for longer record times, but AVCHD is already so small it's rarely worth the tradeoff.

Like MaxThomas said, just save it as the same as your project.

As far as I know, the increase in bitrate from going from 24 to 60 doesn't necessarily result up with higher quality video. When you think about it, there should be an increase in bitrate (megabits per second) when your frames per second increase. For example, if 24fps is 24mbps = ~1 megabit per frame. 1080p60 in "PS" mode is 28mbps... but you're spreading that over 60 frames = ~.47 megabits per frame.

Maybe I'm wrong in thinking this, though. I'm definitely no compression expert.

Whatever you do, keep it in FX. Avoid PS, like Josh says it spreads the 28mbps over 60 frames VS FX that does 24mbps over 24 frames (or 30 frames) so your file sizes are smaller but the quality is lower. I learned this the hard way as 60fps defaults at PS on a new FS700, and I shot it with PS on my first few jobs. Lots of Macro blocking with PS that you don't get with FX.

Nice to have confirmation on my assumption. Thanks, Gene!

So what do you set it to? It appears the only other option with version 3.0 firmware is 1080/60i FX.

Mine shows all the options... What are you editing your final project at? 24p or 30p? And you don't have 1080/24p FX or 1080/30p FX in your REC FORMAT menu option? I have firmware 3.0 and I have all the options. Additionally, in my S&Q menu option, I don't have any interlaced options for REC FORMAT.

Yes, I have all the other options. In S&Q the only option is 1080/60p PS.

In Menu > Rec Set > Rec Format > the options I have
for 60 fps are 1080/60p PS, 1080/60i FX, 1080/60i FH, 1080/60i HQ, 1080/60i LP.

So what do I set for the best quality for 1080p 60 frames per second?

Thanks for any information.

are you editing in a 1080p60 timeline? if so, choose 1080/60p PS, avoid shooting interlaced (1080/60i FX, 1080/60i FH, 1080/60i HQ, 1080/60i LP) - editing in a 60p timeline makes no sense to me though...

I would edit everything in a 24p, 25p or 30p timeline and set the same format in camera...

what format do you have selected outside the S&Q menu? It should be 24p or 30p... I don't know why you wouldn't have all the options in S&Q. Always have the rec format as 24p or 30p. Basically what it means is that you'll shoot 60fps but it will automatically conform it to a slow-motion 24p or 30p clip.

Thanks for the replies. I found where to set the S&Q to 30 fps FX mode. It's in the main menu settings. I was looking for it when I pressed the S&Q button.
