Fs700 evf

After spend more time with the FS700 in the field I realised how important it is to find an EVF for the camera. What EVF are you using with your FS700? And does it work when filming in S&Q motion in 240fps?

I really like the look of the SpectrHD 4 http://www.fvlight.eu/monitors/spectrahd-4-evf-kit-incl-loupe.html#product_tabs_specification

Anyone using the SpectraHD with the FS700 and can comment on how well it works with the camera?

Thanks for any replies.

Hi,

What is your experience with the Cineroid and did it work with the camera set to 240fps?

Cheers

The biggest issue with connecting an external EVF seems to be the latency/delay... I find it almost impossible using anything but the built in monitor while shooting because of it... If shooting people talking, singing or movig in any speedy fashion, it's maddening.

Looking at the service manual of the FS700, it looks like it would be quite possible to remove the LCD and extend the cable to use the built in monitor in a different position... Of course if not done properly you would risk damaging the whole unit. Anyone thought of this or even tried it?

The zacuto gratical is a beast of an EVF. Yes, it is big, but it's also sharp and has great exposure tools. One of the best in resolution.

I believe you might be able to use it through the hdmi output of the FS700, while freeing up the SDI port for a the Odyssey or other recorder...however, I have never tried this myself. In the few times I've used the FS700 with an evf, it has been daisy-chained through the SDI output of the Odyssey 7Q.

I have a Kinotehnik EVF, bought it at the same time I purchased the FS700 over 3 years ago (at the time it had a good balance of image quality and price). I'm still happy with it. Yes it has a small latency, but I have got used to that, even with dialogue. I've also got the optional USB remote control, which I have positioned where my left thumb rests on the grip handle on my rig. This remote allows me to punch in to set focus without having to lift my hand to the EVF itself, very useful when on the shoulder.

I have the Odyssey 7Q+ on the back of my rig. I have connected the EVF to the HDMI on the FS700. The reason being is because you can have the overlays enabled for the HDMI output, while have them disabled when outputting the 4K Raw signal to the Odyssey via the SDI. Interestingly this only occurs when outputting 4K Raw to the SDI, if you output standard HD to the SDI then the overlays mirrors the settings for the HDMI. But having the camera's overlays on the EVF is very useful to me.

I have the Alphatron. It is very useful for focus and has a waveform monitor built. It also has both SDI/HDMI. When I use the Odyssey I run the SDI to the odyssey and the HDMI to the Alphatron. Problem with Alphatron is it is very sensitive to direct sun-light with the stronger diopter - it burns easily. I have had several EVFs and and there is lag.
You just need to adapt to it -

Digging that setup with the focus punch in!

How did you attach the 7Q+ to the back of the rig? Have a link to the USB remote?

The video output isn't at 240p. It skips frames to show you video in real time but in a standard video format.

So are we saying that the HDMI outputs 60P when the FS700 is set in S&Q 240fps?

I like the LCD screen but I find it useless for critical focus. You could always buy the new Sony CLM-FHD5 monitor. It has a built in MLUT for S-Log but I'm not sure what input signals it can receive.

I agree but it's very expensive.

Nice rig. The Kinotechnik looks good. I watched the review by Matt Allard and he really rates it. It's a strong candidate.

That's the Wooden Camera Recorder Slide, I use it too http://woodencamera.com/Recorder-Slide.html

FS700 has a "native" lag of about 2-3 frames. With HDMI output there's an additional 2-3 frame lag. With SDI there is no additional lag. I had the Cineroid retina for a while and ran that via the O7Q. That was pretty good but I think these screen and loupe combos are just too cumbersome to use and too big. I also tested the Kinotechnic and the lag for me was way too much. Total of 5-6 frames you start getting seasickness when going handheld. If you only shoot on tripod I think you could live with it.

Still waiting for someone to release a proper EVF just for that purpose. Gratical Eye is the only one at the moment that kinda ticks most of my boxes... The battery solution with that would require further investments for my rig though. So, still looking...
