FS700 Delays

Hello all,

I've had an FS700 on order since the end of June - so that's two months and yet currently Sony are saying they "will not commit to a delivery date" for me. Which is a bit of a problem as I have a much of projects lined up that I need the camera for, not unreasonable I thought, I mean, you would expect to have a camera within three months of ordering wouldn't you?

So I was just wondering: are Sony UK treating everyone with this level of disdain, or am I 'special'

You're not alone. Sony have a weird system and tend to keep dealers in the dark about shipments. I was only a list since the beginning of June and it wasn't looking good but i got lucky and my number came up last week. Are you looking for body only or with kit lens? They're shipping more kit lens versions so swap to that. Also call around, it very much depends who you're with. I think some of the bigger dealers are being penalised by sony because all dealers seem to be getting small amounts. When i was in my panic mode last week i was checking in with all sorts of resellers and a few thought they might have free stock this week. PM me if you want to know more.

I've had the EK version (the one with the lens) on order the whole time. I'm mostly annoyed as they won't even tell me if I'm likely to have it by the end of this month - which is when I really need it as I'm shooting a low budget TV pilot and their is no money for camera hire! I'll try ringing around a few more dealers.

As a Brit myself, you have my sympathy, even though I'm in Cali. I don't know if the situation is much worse in the UK than over here -- I wouldn't have thought so, specially as the cameras are basically identical -- but honestly, I think the whole pre-order deal is a bit of a scam. I've watched items available for pre-order have their ship dates slip for month after month. If they could actually commit to a ship date, and give you a discount for pre-ordering, it might be worth it; but the reality seems to be quite the opposite.

When I decided to get the FS700, I scoured the net looking for a dealer that claimed to have it "in stock". I then phoned them to confirm that they actually had one in their hands. I had it in my hands within 3 days of making the decision to buy. This was a couple of months ago.

If you can cancel your order with Sony -- and lord knows they have no excuse to stop you -- then you might try this approach.

Mine hasn't arrived yet, but somewhat similar story for me. Decided last Wednesday that I wanted to pull the trigger... called up AbelCine in Chicago, said they'd have more in this week, but then they called me up that same Friday telling me that they had one available and shipped it that day. It's still on the FedEx truck, but is supposed to be delivered tomorrow (thanks weekend and Labor Day holiday :angry:)
 
Sony have always traditionally had supply issues with cameras like this. It was the same for the FS100, the EX1. I guess they build on demand and drip feed to keep warehouse stocks down. I think calling around and just being proactive is easier. I even tried a few state side resellers but they can't officially sell you the camera. Of course i guess you could ask for help on a site like this for a US based helpful soul...

I also heard originally that they had some production issues, some component had a supply problem.

Who knows
