FS700 & 7Q record options

I'm looking at selling my F3 and FS100 and get the FS700/7Q combo.

I would like to be able to record the following:

1080p25 and 1080p50 to Prores HQ or possible other compressed 10-bit codec
2k 100/200fps to a 10-bit compressed codec preferable Prores
4k 25p to a 10-bit compressed codec preferable Prores

I see these options as something that would be asked for by my clients. I'm not interested in capturing raw video, s-log2 in 10-bit 4:2:2/4:4:4 is what I want. Is this possible with the 7Q feed by the 2k/4k output from the FS700?

Also do I have to record on both discs to get higher frame rates like 100/200fps?

yes, but only slog2 or REC709 (which I see not usable at the moment)

not yet

no, you have to go via RAW as 7Q cannot transcode this huge data of HFR in realtime to 10bit ProRes

100fps works on one disk, 200fps you need both

Osslund, I think generally everything on your list is scheduled to come in the next firmware update--whenever that may be--except for 2k 100/200fps capture in ProRes. That's unlikely to happen, last we heard, Raw only.

That being said, for the occasional 100/200fps work... Raw isn't so bad. It is possible we'll see the 4K 120FPS -> 1080P ProRes 120FPS at some point, given that it's a 4 second buffer of 60p. That might be the best/fastest compressed we'll see. I don't think we've been given a confirmation on that one, but they seem reasonably sure 4K 120p Raw is possible (it's actually a 60P capture), and 60P 1080p from ProRes is possible... so that doesn't seem like a terrible leap (though it could be).

Raw being DNG right?I see the two disc spanning in high fps as a downer honestly. Less work with files in post is always good.

When I get my two cameras sold I'm moving into something new so hopefully the 7Q is up to the task by then.

Yes, Raw being DNGs. Yes, the disk spanning at 240fps is a bit of an annoyance, but I don't see how you're going to get that quality without it. I'm hopeful for 4K2HD (ProRes) in 120fps 4 second burst (not confirmed by CD). That should be the highest quality/easiest post-workflow slo-mo we're going to get. But 240fps is still going to be 2k Raw DNGs.

I am also very much looking for the 4 precious second burst...hopefully very very soon!

Merging two disk for high fps is trivial. I have done it quite a few times.
It literally takes seconds.

"On set without a DIT I have no time to fiddle with to much data hassle."

You can do the clip merge later. It doesn't have to be done on-site.
If you view 240 fps without doing clip merge it will look like 120 fps since
you will only be viewing the video from one SSD.

Sounds like you might be better off with an F5 or F55.

I have a feeling the 7q actually only plays back hfr off one ssd anyway to screen and possibly any play out monitor connected. I had a flicker issue that I think was actually helped by this :) can't think of a way to easily test that...

I can't justify the cost so unless the F5 comes down in price it is not an option.

Well, if that's the case then I'd suggest buying the Fs700 and only shooting slow mo internal (or waiting to see if they produce any frame rates compressed) or get a black magic 4k. Word on the street is, they'll sort the problems with the image out (not the 320 base ISO, you're stuck with that).

it's really funny. We had a huuuuge price drop for video cameras & accessories within
the last two years plus a gigantic expansion of features. But what happens now is that
people start complaining about "missing features" and expect to get a combo of alexa,
dragon and F65 for below 10K.
IMHO it's vice versa. If your project doesn't have the budget it cannot justify the requirement.

I believe you are correct that the 7Q only plays back from 1 SSD when playing back a recording shot at 240 fps. I shot a stop watch at 240 fps and played it back in PP. It played back correctly at 8x real time. On the 7Q it played back at 4x real time (120 fps). I then removed one of the SSD's and the 7Q still played the clip back at 120 fps.

I sent a message to CD. I'll you know what I hear.

I can't see it being an issue unless you have some downstream recorder trying to deliver proxies from a playout in which case you might be sampling from only half the data set. I think on another thread re wireless solutions Mitch indicated the outs might all be capped at 30p anyway and are only for monitoring. Eg a 60p source becomes 30p going out. Prob same for hfr, which is good so a bigger downstream monitor can play it. You want your recorder at the start of your chain, unless something needs 60p in which case loop it first if possible. Not sure if same for Athena, it might do 60p on loops and has 6gsdi.

can you think of an instance you care if it's playing back on loop out or screen from one ssd? Prob saves a lot of juice.

If I'm shooting food shots at 240 fps and the director wants to see a playback I can only show him 120 fps - not good. I can reset the FS700 to do a test record at 240 fps internally and play it back but that wastes a lot of time.

I don't see the FS700 as a camera missing features. On the contrary it's very rich in features. Same thing with the F5, they are both well equipt cameras but the cost of one is within what I can justify to charge a client and the other one isn't.

I would like to see the FS700 and 7Q (or any other recorder for that matter) to provide for great looking footage and enable both high fps and 4k but not necessary at the same time. I'm also an editor since 1994 and know how to appreciate an efficiant codec in the edit suit. Prores rather than raw any day of the week given the excellent slog gamma curve and how it can capture reality.

No matter how much I love my F3 and what can be done with it I see so many advantages in the FS700 and it looks like the 7Q is on the verge to unlock it all. But not yet.
