FS700 7Q July update (4k 120fps bursts)

the movement looks great! What's attached on the camera's right side? to the handle rosette?

I must say I'm not yet convinced by this gizmos (but I'm an old school steadicam op, so...) - I've always thought they'd be too heavy to work with for any length of time with any substantial camera (and an FS700 is by no means a substantial camera!). Having said that - how are you power the rig, camera, Odyssey? If you find the right battery solution it should save a fair bit of weight.

My thought before I logged on and saw the pics (iPhone), was a vlock off the back with olofs mount to balance the lens, but I guess it's going to hit the gimbal. If it allows for taller, solid camera plate on top, vlock sitting towards the back on top where the fs700 LCD flaps up maybe. I had some good results with balance last week getting the 7q to sit roughly in that spot when I had the fs700/7q doing some skiing 120fps raw 4k tests on a levelcam

I was wondering if Red volts might have the punch to power all 3 - if you can get a plate to work with them. They'd probably last about as long as they do on an epic though (10 mins or so).

A side comment - I can see no advantage of carrying batteries on a 'movi' rig - unless the shot has an operator pass over surely one would have a battery belt, Vlock in a rucksack or whatever?

All the similar stuff I have made we have had the batts placed off the rig.

When I got my Vlock breakout from Hwoods I had them add an XLR power in - so I can run a single cable to a Vlock breakout box and not have 5 wires doing the long run.

I have bought the bits but not made yet a custom 'break out box'

In this situation Id also look to have the 7q offboard and get a crappy little monitor onboard (or the new transvideo sexy little number)

That's Olof's grip relocator with some old Glidecam Weights

The brilliant bit thing that i really like about the Ronin is that it has a breakout box built-in right under the base plate. There's 2 D-taps, usb, and a port for the light bridge transmitter. I'm using that to power the odyssey.

ah-ha. So the only extra weight is the counterweights on the Rosette - and you need them for balance. Is there, perhaps, a way of positioning the 7Q so it does the job of the weights? Say a Noga arm screwed into the rosette? Every little helps with those set ups, although, to be honest, I suspect you'll just need to get down the gym if you want to survive a day, or maybe try some hard-core ashtanga yoga ;-)

I don't think that's possible, the clearances just aren't there to allow free movement of the gimbal. I wanted to mount the smallhd dp4 to the A7s when on the ronin and even that didn't have enough clearance when rotating around.

There's another issue about the fs700 7q on the ronin... the SDI being on the back constricts how far you can move the baseplate back. Even with a 90 degree connector... that freaking port guard just loves to stick out and kept getting caught until i put a lot of tape on it.

I actually posted another thread where I suggested that the ronin+a7s will be the perfect 4k solution soon once the atoms comes out. (not including the gh4 as i haven't tried one out yet). http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...fect-gimbal-lowlight-(soon-to-be)-4k-solution

I'm kind of curious how RED users fly this when fully rigged out.... An easy-rig will probably be the best solution to help with the weight.

In my testing, using the Ronin to power everything, after about an hour of use, it only dropped down to 3 bars out of 4. It wasn't a consistent hour on though, as trying to balance it took quite a while. Actually shooting was about 25 minutes (with taking breaks and setting it down, but not powering down). And given how easy it is to change that battery, i think its the best solution. Once i'm able to get the red rock micro remote, i'll use the other d-tap to power that too.. but have no idea how i'll be able to counter balance the weight of that. haven't been able to find anyone with this setup yet online.

You seem to have run into the same setup issues I had with the Movi M10 with the 7Q! We made a custom plate to attach to the bottom of the FS700. Then we attached melted down fishing weights to it! It worked. But it was heavy. We had the FS700, the Odyssey 7Q, a Teradeck bolt transmitter, and a wireless follow focus attached to it all.

I would have killed crafty that day for an EZ Rig.... =P

I wondered about this setup for a while, guess I have my answer. I think the brushless gimbals are an amazing technology (king in the air) but don't provide any sensible advantage over a traditional steadicam op. Using that canon 16-35 and a speed booster puts way to much stress on that poor tilt motor. Try using a sony 16mm pankcake, move the camera forward on the plate and ditch the microphone.

Hi all !

Good to know people arrive to balance the FS700 with the Ronin and the 7Q.

In my case, without the 7Q it's ok, no probem to do it with small counter weight (actually 2 ikan hot shoes mount via the screw under the cam).

Good to see the possibility to use the D-TAP, I didn't thing about and I can win some weight, good sharing :)

About the counter weight, do you have the reference or his weight ? Because for sure I want to work with the 7Q.

About the Ronin, yesterday I have a confirmation from Dji that they work on XL arms (more longer so more space on the back of the cam) and 3rd company too !

Thanks !

I'm considering picking up the 10-18mm f/4. I've heard poor things about the performance of the pancake. I wouldn't be ditching the microphone, tho I would love if there was a smaller solution. It's silly that they didn't have a crappy built-in one. It's important to have for reference, saves time on multi cam, and I always shoot 2 channel as backup when wireless receiver is attached.

Do you have an image of that setup with the fishing weights?

Not sure about what the weight is, but it took 6 of these. http://glidecam.com/product-4000-pro
Awesome news about the XL arms. Maybe they'll find a way to make them even lighter.

I know it might not be much of use since you already bought the ronin but for anyone else who's looking for an alternative the gremsy H14 might be a choice..

I just received an email from them confirming a fs700 with speed booster + zoom lens.

Im tempted to invest in a 3-axis stabilizer as well but yeah I'm threading lighty in the subject..

gStabi H14, $2000 more for 2Kg less weight. very good.

i know Ronin looks very attractive because of that affordable one package deal thing but that weight kills me man. i've done couple times of the few hours operation with MoVI M10+Epic Dragon so far and i've realized how good/light the M10 is, after i tested my friend's Ronin+Epic.

hope DJI will update something nice for reducing the weight...changing to the lighter arm, smaller battery etc. once they do even $1000 more for 2.5Kg weight kinda model, i'm in.

freiheit, I can imagine.. want to keep it as light as possible..
At the moment my eyes are turned towards either the gremsy "gstabi h14" or the Letus Helix. From what I know they both weights pretty much the same and are around the same price point if you take into consideration that one "needs" to buy accessories for the Helix.

I was the "first batch reservation" guy for the Helix few month back and did cancel it already.

i'm pretty sure that Helix wins most of the part, especially that "we can put just 1 (or 2) axis to the any monopod/tripod" concept. I was at 9 of 10 step for getting one.

however after I realized that "SDI connection" doesn't work for FS700's raw signal, which need 3G HD SDI speed but Helix only comes with single narrow HD SDI, I had to gave up for getting that beautiful rig.

of course we can connect any camera and monitor/recorder directly, we don't have to keep use that internal SDI connection. I've just wanted to set my FS700 and 7Q more elegant way but without that SDI connect, it looks another ordinary 3 axis rig to me...

yes, H14 looks very ordinary 3 axis but I really like that wireless remote control via iOS/Android apps.
