FS7: FS7 XQD needs RECOVERY HELP!

In the past week I've been on two jobs where the shooter performing the transfer "dragged and dropped". One even boasted to the Field Producer "copying the files is easy. You just drag and drop."

I've been making effort to use Shot Put Pro. Even though it slows down the transfer and does not give you a time estimate as to how long before completion. That is a bit of an annoyance because often after I start a transfer the impatient client will ask how "How long does it say it will take?". And "Don't know. It doesn't say." is not an answer the client under a time crunch to make a flight out of town wants to hear.

Not giving a time estimate actually is quite bad - might be a deal killer for me. I often need it as you're usually downloading at the end of the day. Helps you plan what you're doing. I'm pretty sure you get it from Catalyst Browse don't you?
What about the other download programs?

It can.. its somewhere in the preferences .. you can set time either way..estimate or elapsed.. I always set it to estimated time.. you have always been able to do this since the early version I had.. found it.. off load preferences 4th item down.. button select.. blue light is what you have it set for..

Thanks Donny that makes more sense.
Can I put shotput on 2 computers with the same license? My laptop and home iMac?

Looks like shot-put can only go on one computer at least from what I can see.

I just downloaded a free lite version of Hedge which looks like a very simple interface (like+) and can go on multiple computers . With a licensed version ($99) you get a faster download . Upcoming version will provide logs. This looks very nice to me.

Thanks for the tip Jason.

Sorry I dont know if you can use on 2 computers at once.. you can now swap over from one to another if you are online.. it would be handy if they had say a 2 or 3 computer max set up.. can you with Hedge ?..

Haven't used Hedge.. back in the day I think there was really only SPP.. the lack of logs was the problem for me.. but if the new one will have them thats good.. I wonder how they are doing it so much faster than SPP.. it might slow down with reports..? or they are only doing one pass..

i don'y know if its any faster than SPP though it might be.

I don't need two computers at once, just to have it on my laptop and my home computer for different uses. But i don't want to have to go online and fumble around with some switching process every time I have a job and grab my laptop.
Mainly I like the simplicity.
Smart marketing for Hedge to give away a lite version as that will already do 2 destinations at once.
It does do checksum already even if it doesn't have a log yet. imagine the log is coming soon though.

Im sure its doing a checksum otherwise there wouldn't be much point to it.. :).. I read its faster than SPP.. and maybe its the log that makes SPP slower ?..
SPP also you can download a "trial" version that active for 1 month or something like that.. not sure I would want a "lite" version for my down loads.. rather a trail of the real thing..Im sure Hedge is very good and alot of people use it.. I dont have shares in Imagine.. Ive just stuck with the program I got used it..and it was the only game in town in the past.. but its never let me down..

Ok.. well I wonder how they achieve the higher speeds... maybe the verification method is less stringent .. got to be some reason..

Did anybody mention FCPX in this thread? I always use import via FCPX to a folder (not into library) and apply original plus proxies. I never had an issue. It runs in the in the background while we soot and I am ready to edit immediately. I have learned never to copy directly via finder or WIN explorer. Sorry no idea for recovery.

Just got a very interesting email from "Hedge for Mac" in answer to my questions about speeds of transfer. Never really thought much about how to speed up transfers or the difference between methods. Both links are very interesting with the second one giving lots of info about how to speed up your transfers. In the age of 4K this stuff matters. What I learned - No matter what method you use - bus powered drives and hubs slow you down. Of course most clients just pick up cheap bus powered drives. If there's lots of downloading though it might be worth it to spend an extra few bucks on an OWC powered drive.

BTW - I have no interest in Hedge whatsoever and just heard about it a few pages back on this thread. Not shilling for them. I'm going to ask next if logs (next firmware) will slow them down.

"There are two Hedge versions: a free one and the Premium one. The trial is for the Premium version.

Hedge Free using a slower verification mechanism than Fast Lane, making it on par with Red Giant's Offload and other offloaders (about 2-3x slower than Finder).

Premium offers (next to others things) a copying mechanism that is about as fast as Finder, but with verification of the copy process. Fast Lane is about 2.5-3x faster than Hedge Free, and some users even reported up to 5x speed gains. Here's a graph of benchmarks we ran for all different apps out there:

<bit.ly/speedperappinmbs>

When doing multiple transfers at once Hedge starts to save real time: Finder isn't really good at it for some reason. How much time Hedge can save you depends on your setup. We published some tips and benchmarks over here:

Hope this helps out, please let me know if you have more questions. Happy to be of assistence :) Paul"
