FS5: FS7 viewfinder to FS5

Has anyone tried or know if the Sony FS7's viewfinder can be connected to the FS5?

If possible this would be a great solution to adding a loupe.

Yes, they are compatible. But that stills leaves the issue of where are you going to get a spare FS7 LCD, and how you're going to mount it to the FS5. It's to bad Sony didn't design the FS5's LCD frame so that it could accept the FS7's loupe --- and then sell just the loupe as an accessory. Sure, they'd over charge for it, but at least we'd have the option. Really short sighted on their part.

"Spare" FS7 LCD Viewfinders are available from Sony parts (don't ask me how I know... but if you over tighten the little Allen screw that mounts the LCD to the rod you will learn an expensive lesson as well) (how expensive? $915 usd)

Does that include the LCD screen and the loupe? Not too bad if it does. I might get one at that price. As I noted above, it would be nice to buy just the loupe for a couple hundred bucks -- but that won't fit the FS5. I've spoken to Zacuto and Hoodman about this and we may see a couple of 3rd party solutions down the road.

Thanks Doug, Thats great news Zacuto and Hoodman are looking into it. Olof did mention he was able to tweak Hoodmans EX1 viewfinder to fit.

Shooting without a Loupe especially when your getting into shallow depth of field would be very problematic. I don't think i could shoot without one and just rely on peaking.

Gone are the Z1 and Ex1 1/3 & 1/2 chip days where you could get a way with it. But Super35 we need external monitors or loupes!! YES very short sighted on Sony's part to just hope and a 3rd party option comes out.

Like in Phillip Blooms review I will have to buy one of Hoodmans 500 Series monitors in the meantime and the $$$ add up and not so great for ob doc work on the fly.

Yes with a slight mod the Hoodman fits and works well, and it seems the LCD is rugged enough at least when brand new to hold it without rotating, I was originally concerned about a tendency to drop with the weight of the loupe. I also am experimenting with just a shade made like I make the shades for the Odysseys.

The 2 mods are to cut a bit of the rubber on the right side to allow for the rounded part on the LCD and the other cutting out for the cable in the bottom and around the switch on the velcro wrapper. Hopefully Hoodman will make both a hood and a shade. Other vise it is pretty easy to make the parts and modify them. If you don't want to make the mods yourself contact me and I will modify them for you like I used to do for the NX5U, we used to stock them back then, but I have no plans to do that at present. I can also make the shades if you like, at this point I have no intention for a production run of them, but contact me if you would like one.

I haven't seen the FS5 at all , but I would be careful the LCD can sustain the weight of the hoodman. I used one for years on my EX-1 , but on the F3 it bent the hinges so the door for wouldn't close - big drag.

If you are lucky enough to already own the FS7, the LCD/loupe works great when rigged to the FS5. Many options and ways to do it.
Here's what I use.

That looks bigger than the camera :) Ergonomic wise looks like you would be holding the camera way out in front of you.

digital post can you still attach the top handle with that set up?

You could set it up anyway you like. That is a dove tail with sliding lockdown clamp. Sounds like your preference would be to attach the dove tail more towards the front of the camera. Plenty of ways to skin a cat. You could also side mount it with handle attached. I'm sure someone with come out with a loupe that fits the FS5, but in the mean time - this allows many mounting positions, plus back and forth, left and right flexibility even after its mounted.IMG_8599.jpg

No Doug, thats for just the LCD, attached cable, and attached rid clamp. That did not include a replacement loupe

Bern the parts list show that individual parts could have been ordered but I didn't want to attempt the repair. It would would require a complete disassembly of the monitor. And I didn't want to send it to Sony and be without the monitor for any length of time. As it was, the LCD had to be sourced from Japan through the parts routing and took about 3-4 weeks to get here

Hi guys,

Do you know if the SONYFS100\FS700 Loupe is equal? It will works on Fs5?

Thank you guys!

No way it works. It's just a loupe and it requires the little bumps on the back of the screen to snap on. The fs5 LC isnt even shaped properly for those clips let alone it's missing the little bumps to clip onto.

Just get the kinotehnik bmpcc loupe. Works great on the fs5 with the included magnetic frame, is very small and light and quite inexpensive.
