F5: FS7 viewfinder on F5

Does anyone have any clue if the viewfinder from fs7 can be attached to f5. Do these cameras have the same connector for the viewfinder or does it just look like they have a similar connector?

Cheers for the info :)

I am in the process of getting an f5, is anyone using a third party viewfinder on it, for example alphatron or cineroid retina instead of its own lcd?
Hence i already have a cineroid retina instead of using the 2500 for the sonys viewfinder i could buy odyssey 7q

Plenty of people do this and it does work. Just be aware that you will lose some of the functions that are designed to only work through the viewfinder port, such as sending a LUT to the viewfinder only.

Good to hear, let see if someone makes an adpter cable that separates power and video for the evf connector someday...
However the videosignal that sony is outputting from that connection might not be standard

If the new Zacuto OLED EVF is out - I'd suggest going for that, it's got much more in depth monitoring features than the Sonys.

While I have the Sony viewfinder, I've been using a Pix240i for a heads up display on my F5. I feed the Pix via the sub SDI port(#3). The only feature missing is the ability to zoom focus. Otherwise, everything I see on my Sony VF is available, plus some features offered by the Pix. It is possible to send a LUT to the Pix, so, that's not a problem.

"Gratical HD EVF – January 15, 2015" is this really out already?

I already have the cineroid retina with sdi, so at first i will be sticking with that i quess

thanks for the info nsoltz. I would not spend that kind of money on a, evf made by zacuto, i would rather pay some extra to to sonys oled evf instead.
I do like zacutos rig products, however they tend to come apart if not used properly with caution...

I have the Zacuto HDMI viewfinder and find it a decent piece. But it was $995 as opposed to $3K. I do think the Gratical will be a good product and at $3K it is cheaper than the Sony OLED for F5/55. But, as Mitch correctly points out (Mitch is always correct), you will lose the specific information that Sony passes through the dedicated VF port as well as the ability to view VF LUTs. That would be a pretty big one for me.

As far as FS7 goes, Vocas has posted preliminary info on a top handle, top cheeseplate and mount for Sony VF that looks sweet.

I am planning on shooting 4k raw with pl lenses so fs7 is out of the question. I tested the zacuto hdmi viewfinder, had a kinotehnik for a while and then switched to cineroids retina evf, which works ok. However i which that all these third party viewfinder makers would make their loops as kinotehnik does, long and nice optics, not short and a lot of distortion as they tend to be.

I'm pretty sure one of the features of the Gratical will be the ability to store MLUTs onboard the EVF. So that shouldn't be a big issue. I'm trying to think of what monitoring features you'd lose, but since (on the Sony OLED at least) the waveform is useless, the false colour is limited and only works on SLOG2, the cable is proprietary and a pain in the arse, and the rest of the display information is easily visible on the side-panel.

I feel like the Zacuto will offer a significantly more appealing option - especially since you can simply use a longer BNC cable to access the EVF when the camera is in odd angles/locations (situations where you usually have to abandon the Sony EVF because you can't get your eye up to it.

$3k may seem pricey, but it's a lot cheaper than the Sony, and if it works as planned - considerably more versatile.

I do not see zacuto as a brand to which products i would invest 3k in, even though they might come up with a brilliant product. i will much rather spend the 3k on odyssey and the left over cash on red wine :)

I am satisfied with the features i have on my cineroid, i do not need luts. I mainly is use the waveform and know what i want from my slog in terms on exposing it hence i do the colorcoorection for the footage. To my knowledge odyssey has the ability to use luts so that can be used as a monitor for clients on site.

I use the Samurai on my F5 with a Grid loupe designed for the Red LCD which is a 5 inch screen. The Samurai as an EVF works really well and is sharp enough for focusing as well as having the added bonus of knocking of Prores files at the same time as recording internally on the camera. LUT's also go through to the Samurai.
