FS7: FS7 Viewfinder Freeze

Bizarre quirk today-- Shooting FS7 with Sony 28-135 lens, XAVC-I 3840 23.98 internally and 4K DCI 23.98 to the Odyssey 7Q+ (this was as much for my own technology demo and workflow as it was for the shoot which in reality could have been done with a DSLR and the intended audience still would have thought it a masterpiece). SLog3. Since I could not apply a LUT due to the 4096 HDMI output, I exposed with a gray card at 42% using the Odyssey's WFM.

BTW, this shoot was just a series of interviews and I was very happy with the 28-135 for that particular application. I only wish the lens had focal length markings.

Set up lighting, audio, exposure, stand-in test for positioning, etc etc and then just turned off camera because we were another 15 minutes from shooting. When I turned the camera back on, VF image froze on the first frame it saw. All menu displays were visible in VF and I could select menu options. But frozen image. Everything was fine HDMI out to the 7Q+ so there was no point in messing with anything.

When I got home, I could reproduce the problem with the Sony lens as well as with a couple of other EF lenses on Metabones and Commlite. Did an ALL RESET and everything came back as it should. Of course, I have learned my backup lessons so I have my backup ALL FILE on SD card which I could then restore and get back to settings.

But definitely very troubling.

Yep, SYSTEM RESET/ALL FILE is a get out of jail free card. Worth noting that you should make a new ALL FILE with each software update.

Do you remember how tapes with different type of lubrication would plug or even destroy heads?

I would say that bad FW is the current equivalent, you just have to figure out what works.

I am sure Sony will sort all this out soon, it is annoying. But it is far easier to reset-all than to replace or have a head professionally cleaned. This has never been a perfect industry...

Yep, I mentioned this in my DCI 4K from HDMI thread. Assuming you are using HDMI and not the XDCA, I believe mine was ok after a reboot. I believe I was using a Nikkor with a MB Ultra. Since I was also recording to the internal I wanted the VF to unfreeze so I could verify that he internal was recording, etc.

I will probably start a thread on it but y'all should read Ned's FS7 review in the current Digital Video magazine. He was also featured on The Digital Production Buzza last week. He knows Horton! ;)

Y'all be cool,
Robert

Thanks for the shout out, Robert!

Now I remember that you had the same freeze with DCI 4K. In my case, the reboot did no good. I actually had to do a Reset, but really didn't want to do that while preparing for a shoot. I keep the SD card with my backup ALL FILE in the camera exactly for these situations.

Wait. What is the "FW"? And are you telling me if you choose to record both internally and via a 7Q+ for example, that the VF freezes as a matter of course or is it an anomaly. I'm getting the impression it's a matter of course and that sometimes it doesn't unfreeze. Please tell me I'm full of beans because if that's what the VF does while dual recording, I'm sorry but that sucketh!

Just tested the same set up again and no freeze. This tells me that it is non repetitive and some form of firmware glitch. The ALL RESET then is just a good safe way of bringing things back. We will of course have to see whether it recurs after firmware 2.0 or whether that FW will introduce something else. We're dealing with a complex little computer with a sensor which is why despite all of the pre-release testing, something is inevitably going to be discovered in real world use.

Seems like a number of people have had issues when using the HDMI that has caused some pretty bad issues. I'm too afraid to plug anything into the HDMI, so I just avoid it at this point.

This was the issue I had right after the FS7 came out, Sony had my camera in repair for two weeks. Basically they found out it was a weird combo of 4K HDMI out w/ assorted LUT effects on (having a LUT on SDI 2, for example, might cause it to freeze if you are also sending out HDMI 4K). I think they'll have this resolved in the new firmware. Speaking of which, didn't AbelCine say that was supposed to be released on the 15th?

I thought Juan mentioned the end of March as Vrs 2.0 update. Haven't heard anything else. I'd rather it be delayed and rock solid than rushed and buggy. I do wish they made an emergency patch just for the magenta. It seems like FW2.0 will be a major fix to correct the issues.
