FS7: FS7 variable ND vs. 4X4 filters

Just wondering if there’s much of a difference betweeen the internal variable ND filters in the FS7 and 4X4 ND filters in regard to image quality. The variable NDs are much more convenient to use over swapping large filters in a matte box multiple times, but are there any downsides?

Are you referring to the Variable ND of the fs7 II.. from working with the fs7 II I found the variable ND is very good.. no problems. its not actually filters but the ONE PIECE of glass ..an electric current is then put through it to give the ND effect.. its not in the Venice.. wether that's down to higher quality spec,s or just covering larger sensor.. who knows.. but for the average Fs7 user its 100% better than swapping out 4x4 ND filters.. and certainly for TV/Computer delivery its totally fine.. IMHO..

Yeah, it definitely a lot easier to turn a dial than to swap 4X4 filters. But since some filters are better than others, I wonder if there is any noticeable difference in image quality outdoors in bright conditions with 4X4 filters.

AFAIK the variable ND doesn't provide variable IR cut -- so if you're in need of heavy ND filtration in a situation where there may be IR issues, going with a proper glass ND/IR filter might make sense. (Ideally, each ND filter should have a matched amount of IR filtration...)

What would be the most noticeable difference when comparing images between the variable ND and a 4X4 ND?
