Can this be true? Or am i missing something?

This is in regards to the release of new XQD cards.

https://blog.sony.com/press/sony-en...r-cameras-and-worlds-first-xqdsd-card-reader/

From this link i pressed to gain access to firmware updates as stated the cameras require, at the bottom of the page.

Nope. I've not it discussed, but you have my attention...

Not sure how the M card "enhances Ultra HD offerings" when it has a slower read speed than the current G series, but hey, I don't work in marketing...

FW 3.1 scheduled for March is about right given v3 is due to be released about now.

Unless this unlocks some magical format they hope to release, the update is probably just so the cards work in the camera? Maybe they are discontinuing the current generation G cards for these instead as their cameras move towards higher data outputs.

So FW 3.0 is due to come before March then.

Regarding offload speed, I'd say it's difficult to reach the high transfer speeds in my tests so regardless of a greater read speed from the XQD M cards compared to the XQD G cards offloading wont be any better. But G cards still can write faster.

Are these M variant cards are going to be any cheaper than the G series or is Sony 'Enhancing' its profits?

Yeah, its more the date and the FW i was interested in. What could this mean for us? Time will tell.

Since the current cards can do everything we need in the FS7, why would we upgrade? Price? Size?

Higher frame rates, compressed raw?

Re XQD, sounds like an overall more robust card. I read and so always thought that the consumer version of the XQD cards didn't have the same level of protection internally etc., i.e. for example N-Series vs S-Series - the S-series had "Wear Leveling Function, Error Correction Code, Data Refresh Function"

F5/F55 firmware is being released in a few weeks, middle January says Sony, so hopefully FS7 will follow suit and especially hoping Sony will address the FS5.

I know for some people they don't see it as big deal, maybe they came from DSLR world or other camera's but coming from F55, FS7, I think those folks would find it a bigger deal than the others.

$159 vs $399 not so negligible? I don't think so.

Sony cards seem to be down to a £100 premium now for same speed 128Gb. I still consider that a bit on the printer cartridge rip-off principle though.

However I bought a Lexar 440Mbps 128Gb card but it wouldnt work so I updated the FS7 to v3.1. The card now works and the files are good but when I playback in camera I get a media read error. Lexar are swapping the card for me in case it is that...but the Lexar support person grumbled as to 'why do still they say its compatible on our website'...

Its a shame as either there is an XQD protocol and defined spec or there isnt. You dont get this confusion and nonsense with P2, CF, SD, Micro SD formats whoever made the cards - just make sure they are fast enough and off you go.

I ended up ditching two of my x1400 Lexar XQD cards after a "media error". I bought two of the 64gb Sonys from B&H and it worked out about £100 cheaper than CVP (including all the customs charges). So I now have 4 Sony XQDs and two older Lexars (that don't have any problems) on backup.

I just ordered 4x 128gb Sony G-series cards for 169 USD each. I reckon those wont give me any troubles, and for the price, hassle-free is really worth it.

Good tip mate - the 128Gb G Series seem to be about £180 delivered inc all taxes/duty so definitely worth the import. Fair price.
