FS7: FS7 slo-mo to Shogun

Hi guys, I have a shoot coming up and i would love to know if i can capture slo-mo at HD (120fps as max supported fps by shogun) to shogun via sdi or HDMI. So far I have been unsuccessful in getting the slo-mo to record to shogun. Is it even possible at all or do i have to use internal XQD?

It doesn't work this way. The FS7 video outputs are limited to HD60p max. If you had the XDCA Extension Back then you could take the RAW output and be able to record 2K up to 240p on the Odyssey7Q+.

The Shogun currently does not record FS7 RAW. When it does it will not be able to go to 2K240p because it is limited by recording via a single SATA bus (only one SSD). The Odyssey7Q+ utilizes two SSDS nd can record the full 2K240p RAW output of the FS7.

As Mitch says, that's not how it works. The Shogun's 120fps input is nifty, but not supported by most camera manufacturers. For frame rates over 60p with the FS7 you must either use the internal recording, or use the XDCA-FS7 back unit and a compatible recorder - the only two at present being the Odyssey7Q(+) and Sony's AXS-R5. The Odyssey will almost certainly cost less, and many people like that they also get a monitor for the price. As far as trade offs though, the AXS-R5 has better compression (less storage space), and is capable of recording 240fps to just one data card - no recombination in post. My largest issue with the fact that the O7Q requires recording 240fps across two cards is it means you likely need to keep more cards around on a highspeed/mixed production - you'll need at least one set for high speed, and one or two alternates for regular speed footage. However, they're opening up to some cheaper third party SSD drives, so that requirement is less onerous.

I've recorded 180fps to the Shogun, just not during shooting. Record internally then playback to Shogun.

Hey, thanks guys. This really helped me get some stuff straight. I am currently trying out the Fs7 and kinda reviewing it. quirky camera i would say, has 2 different personalities. Either way, i will go the internal route or slo-mo i guess.

Yes, that's possible. But this means the internal compression has already been applied. Only useful for specific workflow purposes. You're not getting the lost data back by doing this.

True, and HDMI is only 8 bits, so there's losses there, but for me, a CS6 Premiere user, I have no other option to get my 4K footage into Premiere. I found it convenient enough to run the footage through Shogun to get the high frame rate recording into a 24P recording. The quality looks very good, despite the XAVC compression being added to the loop. Heck, I'm thrilled as heck, coming from an EX3, which could only do 60P at 1/2 HD resolution. 180FPS at full HD is a major step up from that. I still can't believe this camera didn't cost $40,000. The still frames I grab off this timeline look better than the 16MP images I get from my Nikon D7000 with kit lens. (Not really saying much because the Nikon 18-200 lens is just awful to begin with.)
