Hoi,

Just finished first new reel since acquiring an FS-7 in April 2015. Approximately 50% of shots from FS7, also includes some 5Dmk3 raw, C100, etc.

Any and all comments very much welcome. Any "WTF is that shot doing in there?" moments would be particularly useful (and of course, any "wow" shot comments will be tolerated ;-).

Cheers folks,

jason

Solid demo reel.

Old Man ejecting the shell casing, awesome, as were many other shots.
The audio mix sounded a little hot on my MBP.

Cheers,

Thanks Bill and Milan, very much appreciate your kind words. :-)

The geezer with the shotgun was a godsend, I love that shot too. Out in rural Hampshire, S. England, shooting one scene for a music video with a woodsman, and discussing our desire to film someone shooting a ukulele. Before we know it he's calling his neighbour to come over and show off his shooting. Prior to the shot (no pun intended), I asked the old guy what distance he thought he could be sure of hitting our target from, to which he replied without hesitation "I dunno boy, never shot a ukulele ... how farst do 'ey move?" Legend. :-D

I agree that the mix is probably a little high. I tend to normalise web-only deliverables to about -3dB, d'you think it should be closer to the standard -6 or even -12dB Bill?

Anyone else with any thought (+ve or -ve), feel free to shout! ;-)

Cheers,

jason

You really captured a moment there. The expression on his face is priceless.
Sorry, I'm not an audio expert, perhaps others can chime in?

Keep up the good work, oh, also loved the moped/scooter follow shots in India.

Cheers.

Lots of great shots. I particularly like the people on the scooter from behind and the flaming frying pan. The guy in the NFL hat at 2:19 and the flipping spatula just before it don't do anything for me. Everything is really nice.

Personally I would replace the shots before the waterfall of the boats, they seemed very washed out on my screen.

Rest looked like nice, solid reel!

If I may I thought the shot semi overhead of the dance workshop? was week in comparison to everything else.
Thanks Patrick, I'm pretty keen to keep in a nod to my dance doc work, which although rarely 'glamourous', in fact provides a very relaxing and fertile creative space. I think I need to work on the colour treatment of that shot (5Dmk3 raw), plus perhaps look at a speed ramp. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the kind words Doug, much appreciated to be sure. I can see what you mean about the chef and his show-off spatula spinning, I'll see if I can find something more interesting to go in there - and if not then I'd better shoot it ASAP! :-)

Thanks Wannabe, those shots are also 5dmk3 raw, and have been through two or three parses of grading now, so perhaps I should try going back to a clean slate and re-grading the rushes.

Cheers guys,

jason

Agree with this. Everything else is quite a level above that shot which in comparison looks a bit like a rehearsal. Very well done.

Thanks V. much Ben, your opinion is well appreciated. Definitely sounds like I need to give some attention to replacing that shot, or at the very least completely re-inventing the grade!

Cheers,

jason

Nothing wrong with the shot per se. Everything else just sings out is all and so makes it look bad by comparison.

Just an FYI, I've re-edited the reel in line with your comments. I felt part of the weakness of the dance shot was it's placement after the CG Saudi shots, so swapped it's position for 20s later (and chose another, more dramatic, jib moment). I also removed the 'name drop' of Julian Assange, seeing as it's a pretty ugly shot, and nobody seems to recognise him anyway! Now added in another ramped off-speed shot taken from a speeding car in Ghana. Unfortunately the HFR at real-time introduces some strobing that I'm not happy with. Does anyone know of an effective technique to induce motion-blur onto HFR footage played back in realtime?

Cheers guys,

jason
