FS7: FS7 Recording 444 Question

I believe only if the Sony RAW recorder is used somehow and then output as ProRes 4444 or SR444 in post. Can you record RAW from the FS7 on the Odyssey yet? If so, then a similar workflow would work with it also. Over the camera's SDI you'll only ever get 422 uncompressed.

The first implementation of ProRes internally on the FS7+XACA back does not include ProRes 4444. I believe it is in Sony's roadmap. The camera + the XDCA back will output 12bit raw to either the Sony solution or to the Odyssey 7Q/7Q+. As has been discussed on other threads, there are currently a few issues with Raw recording to Odyssey but CD is working on a fix according to Mitch and Dan Keaton. Meanwhile, there are workarounds also detailed on this board. Then simply transcode to a ProRes or SR format as above.

I keep seeing threads on GH4 4K footage being transcodeable to 1080P 4:4:4. If true, would this also be possilble for 4K FS7 footage?

Of course you could transcode 4:2:2 material to a 4:4:4 codec but it doesnt mean that color information not present in the original shot will simply be created by the transcode.

A true 4:4:4 color sampling cannot be created from a RAW signal if they are both the same resolution -- the information simply is not there. However if the recording is to a lower resolution then the original higher resolution can be utilized to sample adjacent pixels to create an effective 4:4:4 color sampling.

Convergent Design is developing a compressed 4:4:4 recording for the Odyssey7Q and 7Q+. When available we plan to offer exactly this functionality.

As the other guys have stated, you can't get 4K 4:4:4 from the F5(5)/FS7 sensors. Period.

But a 4K 4:2:2 image should (in theory) still have enough red and blue colour information to yield 2k/HD 4:4:4 when downsampled. So you should be able to transcode 4K XAVC into a 2K 4:4:4 ProRes (or equivalent) file via Resolve or something similar.

I shoot primarily in SR444 1080p on my F5, but when I need slow-motion, my go to is always 4K XAVC for framerates up to 60fps so that I can downsample to a 4:4:4 HD file to better match my SR444 material (and it seems to have worked well so far).

Thanks,
should be more specific. 1080 or 2k is all I need.
So clearly there is no solution just yet, but its a possibility in the future with 7Q.
Good to know, will keep an eye on Odyssey.
