FS7: FS7 RAW woes & data distribution between: 12-bit RAW, 16-bit RAW, & 10-bit S-Log

Here is the reason why the FS5 and the FS7 will never record FS RAW internally. It has nothing to do with what will fit onto an SD card or what is or isn't someone else's patent. There's a completely different reason not to record FS RAW to an internal card.

It is useless to.

FS RAW is an intermediate format. Literally ZERO post programs in the world read it (well maybe something internal at Sony in Japan, but nothing available to the public). FS RAW is interpreted and processed by every device that reads it. The Shogun turns it into video. The Odyssey either turns it into video or turns it into CinemaDNG. Even Sony's own RAW recorder solution transforms the FS RAW into the different but similar RAW format used by the F5 & F55.

Sony is going to continue to output FS RAW so that these devices can be made to work with it. There is not processing room within the cameras to support a second form of RAW such as the format used by the F5/F55. So it is simply not going to happen.

Hence the rumours of a RAW based codec Sony were allegedly looking at. So a consumer facing container with RAW data in it. Totally unsubstantiated though, it was on rumour sites last year.

But there's no reason why Sony couldn't record some form of RAW in camera one day. Even if it's FS RAW, they'd just need to combine that with an SDK to read it - like ArriRaw, Blackmagic, DNG, Red already do etc,. Most of my apps can read these formats natively because of that.

I would just all together forget about RAW (external or internal) from FS5/7. It's just to clunky and with to many issues. If you really need to go raw go with an F5 and raw recorder or Red. FS7 is a camera to operate as it is. Once you'll add all the pieces for raw it completely kills it's handheld usability.
