FS7: FS7 Primers Equinox Edition HELP!

http://www.4kshooters.net/2016/12/1...inox-edition-eliminate-the-dreaded-sony-look/

Just wondering if anyone has used these and whether they are worth buying? I haven't been able to find ANY other article or user experience on these primers. I'm actually not entirely sure how you use them actually. Are they basically just LUTs? Or are they something you use on the first node before any grading? For the usual 709TypeA LUT and any other LUT I usually use it on the last node.

Is it a scam or do they actually do what they claim to do? I'd have thought more articles would have discussed this.

Thanks

Hrvoje Simic who came up with these is a nice guy and you can chat to him about his work on Reduser - specifically on this thread - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?153751-Improving-the-Camera-The-Image. Be warned, he does sometimes post like a Werner Herzog documentary voiceover!

It's not a scam (Like BertLUT isn't a scam) if it does something you want to do but have no idea how to do. But however much he and others dress it up to be some sort of magic potion, and he/they really will, it's still a subjective colour transform wrapped up in a LUT.

Personally, I'm not interested in paying someone money to replace a bit of a green tint with a bit of a red tint when I am perfectly capable of doing similar myself.

Equinox Edition... This starts to sound like the never ending hack threads on personal-view.com with patches for Panasonic GH2, fancy names of builds / editions and 3 page long descriptions.

I'm a DP and colorist and just finished post on a feature shot on fs5 that is playing at cinequest. I've come out pretty strongly against these as I think Hvroje is disingenuous.
A artistic or film emulation lut is great to use on set as it helps impress the director and gives you a better idea what your ratio and color choices avtually look like.
Moving into post the on set LUT gets thrown away and a new LUT or saved look gets built that balances ths artistic end reaults with what the footage as a whole can support. This means trying the look or LUT on all the scenes and scaling opacity or changing gamma or curves to find sometving that wont break your footage.
What Hvroje wont acknowledge is that all LUTs are destructive so we want to use them to accomplish artistic intent at the least opacity possible and with care. Every correction will break footage at some point and LUTs are just a bunch of corrections.
He's selling this as a way to clean or balance the signal witout telling you that this is changing the footage and your subsequent grades will pay that cost with noise, off color in skin and banding. The existing color science from sony does have faults but those come from trying to balance one LUT for all scenarios and Hvroje's LUT will have just as many issues.
Much better to find a balance between a node with a s curve and slog to rec709 in resolve.
