FS7: FS7 on a Jib - LANC extension?

The LANC port is just a a 2.5mm stereo TRS connector, Similar to the more common 3.5mm TRS cables/connectors, but smaller. Here's a cheaper 12ft cable: http://www.amazon.com/Your-Cable-Store-12-Headphone/dp/B000Z0YECU

Over distance you do lose voltage, and cables vary in quality, but typically you shouldn't have an issue over 20' or so.

More importantly, make sure that when you plug the lanc controller directly into the camera that the feature you want works properly.

A completely alternate option to explore is the wifi adapter - you can use the web browser wifi with a phone or tablet to control iris on e-Mount and Canon lenses.

Yeah cool. The length of the extension I was looking at is 50'. A typical jib length is 24', add 6' for the rear section, and another 3' to go through the head. With a 30' jib & 10' out the back, that cable would still be ok. It'd be a stretch for 40'.

The biggest issue I've found with the wi-fi is the fact the browser tends to want to refresh the page constantly. To be honest i need something like the hand grip and the immediacy of the dial rather than stuffing around with a screen. With the F5 I've also found that you can lose the wi-fi connection when you're 30 or 40 feet away.

He needs Iris control, not record control. SDI doesn't carry that.

Start/stop and even having access to the menu would be a nice added bonus, but I really need the aperture control. Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

The LANC protocol used by the FS7 lets you access the assignable buttons, and the grip that ships with the FS7 has assign buttons 4,5, and 6 on it - as well as directional buttons for the menu. So, by assigning the menu to button 4, 5, or 6, you could have full menu control via LANC.

There are a few other LANC controllers that support these Sony assign buttons, if the handgrip layout won't work for you.

Yeah thanks I've got the handgrip pretty sussed. Was pretty much wondering if anyone had tried using an extension, but guess I'll be the guinea pig! I'll report back and let y'all know.

Your only issue is electrical. The baud for LANC protocol is only 9600 and it's running 5volts. Essentially, you just need to make sure your cable doesn't have too much voltage drop over the distance. Low quality cable with bad shielding could cause you problems, but with good cable it ought to work. You don't need to buy any specific brand - you can even make it yourself with the 2.5mm TRS connectors. You can also use a 3.5mm cable, and then an adapter. It's very flexible.
