FS7: FS7 ND Wheel Problem and Solution

I had a bit of a scare this week with the FS7, and wanted to give everyone a heads up.

The ND wheel on the FS7 began to turn freely without moving the actual ND lenses. Fortunately, it failed in the “clear” position, but the loss of internal ND was devastating. After messing with the camera, I discovered that there were two small holes on the wheel, each with an even small hex screw in them.

I have a few sets of small screwdrivers for computer repair, and with a little trial and error, I found that a .9mm hex screwdriver worked. After tightening both of the screws, it works as expected again. Hex screwdrivers that are that small are often hard to find on short notice, so I’d recommend making sure you have one before you need it.

Thank you for this.

Ive had quite a few other screws on the FS7 becoming loose already. Made in China!

Made in China!

So are Apple gadgets and computers. Quality seems fine with them.

Any unreliability of the FS7 is due to Sony cost cutting not the factory worker in China who is putting these things together for a pittance.

So far I haven't had any serious issues like this with mine- but cosmetic is another story. I have an 8 year old HVX and it looks better than my "new" FS7. Specifically the metal extending bar that holds the grip looks terrible, paint flaking off everywhere. I've only shot a feature and a few regular jobs and have done nothing but baby it.
