FS7: FS7 Idiot | Why is my ISO adjustment not working in Cine EL mode?

Ok, I just got my FS7 today and I own up to being an FS7 Idiot straight off the bat.

I was using the C100 previously and saw this as a great upgrade, I have used the FS700 in the past and I also own the A7s.

My main prob straight away is the ISO not adjusting when I am in cine EL mode, I don't get it! I obviously have to read up on Slog-3 but any tips would be much appreciated !

Thx

ISO is always 2000 in CineEI. Always.

All that changes is the VF display if you are using a VF LUT. You can choose to record the LUT or not.

Thanks,

So am I right in thinking that the ISO is fixed at 2000 so you either adjust f-stop or put ND on to adjust for exposure?

What about if in dark or low light situations, I guess then you have to use custom mode ?

Thanks for any insights!

Yes, you got it.

I'm going with custom mode in low light. Matrix on or off and different gammas are worth testing.

Or you do it in post. Cine EI is made to be used with luts (although they cocked it up a bit on the fs7 in this firmware). When you have the lut on it darkens or lightens in your monitor as you change ISO but the original file will either be over exposed a bit or underexposed a bit as you have adjusted based on the lut applied visuals. if you vary the EI EI800 or EI6400 you will get either a cleaner end file with less highlight room (EI800) or more highlight room but a raised noise level (EI6400). Sony has determined EI2000 the best compromise between highlight room and shadow noise. Sony Catalyst browser keeps the meta data and adjusts the original file to the exposure seen in the lut other software you would do it by hand. EI just moves the midpoint really. its hard to grasp but very much like film.

So far just playing in Catalyst browser its been pretty easy to adjust colour temp (between the 3 forced presets in CineEI) and it has basic magenta/green adjustment along with the sony official slog luts. I think this will be the first step in my workflow anytime I shoot SLog3 or CineEI.

All that being said I think I'm leaning towards HG7 in custom for most video run and gun stuff heading for the lightest grade by someone else. Decent trade off of DR and image characteristics not to mention exposing the image is like I've been used to for years with video so I can go off muscle memory as opposed to stop and think like I'd have to with Cine EI.

What i really need to experiment more with is using baked in luts of different types like film stocks. I'm in the midst of launching a new production company so I testing time is in short supply.

..or if one wants to take the easy/convenient route(Take advantage of what s-log3cine offers but lose 100% of it's grading latitude in post). Burn-in the LC709A LUT while in EI. You'll have full control over your in-camera iso's and the camera will react and lut adjust to whatever you change your lut to. Shoot at 1250 iso or lower and any visible "noise" will disappear but your highlight DR will be negatively impacted BTW.

Plus you'll get a 95% replica of ARRI's Rec709 look. I know Doug doesnt like this LUT and he's prob gonna chastise me, but Im just offering up one of the many many options these cameras offer.

I've been meaning to test this against some of the other gammas for a baked in look to hand off.
