FS7: FS7 Firmware v3 Format Tests

Bumping this thread because I've got a shoot in a few weeks that could use 240 fps and perhaps raw w/ the Ody 7Q...
Because of the hassles from the get-go of shooting raw w/ the FS7, I've stayed away. Just hoping Mitch and others here might shed any light on the V3 firmware "fix" to the raw signal coming out of the FS7 extension unit ?? Am I better off sticking with Slog3 and 180?
Thanks for any input (perhaps this deserves a new thread??)
Forget shooting 240 fps with the fs7. It still lools like garbage.

Sounds like I can pair this with my Atomos Assassin. Or is the O7Q+ the prefered option? Since both do 4K HDMI, except the Assassin maxes out UHD, if that matters.

Thanks for the reply Liam. I will say the silence since V3 fw came out with "fix" has been rather deafening...or maybe I'm just not looking at the right places on the internet??

I note posts referring to FS7 HDMI output of 4k and am rather confused, is this at 50/60p 10bit or only up to 30p. I was given to understand at a recent Sony training day for the FS7 that the HDMI out was only V1.4 not v2 as I had hoped. If only V1.4 then I was under the impression that 4K max frame rate was 30 and for 4K 50p HDMI V2 was needed. Or was this part of the upgrade?
Perhaps someone can confirm this for me?

I haven't checked the HDMI output, but from memory, I think you are right. Either way, I wouldn't trust an HDMI connection for an external monitor.

Nick and everyone,

I paid a lot of attention to what was discussed here about clip attributes in Resolve. I am selecting data in the clip attributes for my S-Log XAVC-I footage, and again data for its delivery. However, I am having some difficulty with my results since my final exported footage is different in contrast and saturation to how the footage looked inside Resolve. So if I choose data in delivery, the picture will have a lot more contrast, dark areas will be crushed, some highlights will be lost, and saturation will increase; and if I use video, the picture will look almost flat, with very little contrast and colour. All I want is my exported footage to look the way it did in Resolve, within the same monitor. And importing back to Resolve the exported footage does confirm that its contrast and saturation was increased during delivery with data selected.

What am I doing wrong? I have searched a lot in the internet about video/data levels, but have not found anything that solves my problem. So in summary: Should I select auto, data or video levels in clip attributes? And what should I choose in delivery? Would generating a soft clip as an output LUT help - and what would the configuration be if it is the right way to go? I am not even worried about monitor calibration; I just want the footage to look the same inside and outside Resolve, all within the same computer.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies. Sorry for taking your time.

I had an issue where there appeared to be a gamma shift from the image I saw in Resolve to any other playback (FCPX, QT, etc.). The image appeared to be darker / more crushed. What I did to solve it was under the "DELIVER" section in Resolve I would click "More Options" under the "Format" section and set the Video/Data Level to "Data (0-1023)". This seemed to fix my issue but your issue may be something different all together.

Thanks for your answer, Jeremey! I am also setting Video/Data Level to "Data (0-1023)". And contrast and saturation are being increased. I have used resolve in two differente computers with the same results, so there must be some configuration I am doing wrong.

I read an article from Alister Chapman where he explains that some people may experience problems with crushed shadows
in Resolve - my problem! - due to the fact that most cameras shoot with extended video range, while Resolve only has levels for data and video range:

There Are 3 Data Ranges Used For Video – Data CV0 to CV1023, Legal Video 0-100IRE = CV64 to CV940 and Extended Range Video 0-109IRE CV64 to CV1023 (1019 over HDSDI). Most Modern Video Cameras Record Using Extended Range Video, 0-109IRE or CV64 to CV1019. Resolve Only Has Input Options For Data Levels or Legal Range Video. There is no option for Extended Range video. (…)
Resolve Only Has Output Options For Data Levels or Legal Range Video. There is no simple option to output, monitor or export using just the 64 to 1019 range as a 64 to 1019 range. So, clearly anyone wanting to work with Extended Range Video has a problem. (…)
So why not just use data levels for everything? Well that is an option. You can set your clips attributes (in the media pane) to Data Levels, set you monitor output to Data Levels and when you render choose Data Levels. In fact this is what YOU MUST DO if you want to convert files from one format to another without any scaling or level shifts. But be warned, never, ever, grade like this unless you add a Soft Clip LUT (more on that in a bit) as you will end up with illegal super blacks, blacks that are blacker than black and will not display correctly on most devices.

He goes on to describe how to make a 1D soft clip for the delivery. I did exactly what Alister said in his article, but noticed no change at all. To anyone who can help: thanks!

One of the advantages of Prores over XAVC is that I can edit at least five times as many streams simultaneously (as in pictures in picture) as I can with XAVC without dropping frames.

One day, when NLEs use GPUs to decode XAVC, that may change.
