FS7: Fs7 Control Grip "Skipping" or slipping - Field fix???

The grip is "skipping" it's ratchet lock when stressed.
It is only in the "forward" direction.
It is getting progressively worse, and will eventually end up with the camera on the ground, I fear.
Anyone have a field fix?

No field fix. Had that happen to me well within warranty. Sony took it back, sent me a replacement while they fixed mine, for free. Had another issue that I caused trying to do something to the grip that really cant be done and had to send it back again. They fixed it, but not for free and no loaner.
But if you are within warranty, they should fix it for you.

you can call me -I can overnight you an FS7 grip with ARRI rosette
that doesnt suck - to get you thru your shoot.

once I know exactly what it's doing I might can suggest a trick

first thing is put a piece of regular paper between the hirth teeth of the
rosettes if it's slipping at the camera end

Thanks so much, Caleb !! ... but I'm in Poland at the moment.
The major camera house in Warsaw can fix it, but cant get the parts in time.
They say they are seeing this problem a lot.
I think/hope I can rent a shape/Wooden Camera grip for a few days.
I will for sure look further into your grips when I get home!!!

Annoying indeed. I almost dumped my camera twice. Sony needs a recall on these grips. I'm guessing it only happens to the 1st generation machines. They know about it and I would hope they solved the problem in later cameras.
If the handgrip troubles mentioned are with cameras 6 months or newer, then Sony really needs to step up to the plate and either issue a recall or an addendum.
 
It would be nice to know when the grips that are failing were purchased. Mine was one of the first to fail and one of the first to be sold. Sony replaced it immediately at that time and the replacement has been fine since.
 
Just FYI. Im familiar with FS7 grips internally.
If you're out of warranty I can either repair the slipping issue
or lock it into the position you send it in. Cost approx $75. 2 day turnaround
in my shop New Orleans.
 
This is a great write up and way to go for tackling this and sharing it. But realistically speaking you either have to be an experienced machinist or just gifted to get this done safely following these instructions. Many of these methods are sub optimal - not the way to do it. Critical issues are unmentioned- so sure it's your grip- give it a whirl, DIY is the best. But be prepared for curves.

Ive repaired 100 of the FS7 slipped grips- to do it right is hard work. and its tricky.
Machining the screws out as described here is using a sledgehammer instead of the right approach. If you drill too far what do you do? I'll tell you - youre going to have to machine
a new bolt circle - off axis- and then tap it. Next question is do you have a rotary table and a milling machine (and 10 hours).

There is a field fix - gaff tape. Lots of it. As for a permanent fix. Sony charges $600 and takes 3 weeks. I'm $245 and overnight.
