FS7: FS7 Cards

So I hit the button to buy an FS7.

(I have a shoot this weekend)

There are not too many cards in the UK at the moment.

Can someone give me a simple run down on the variants.

Also can I download off the camera via USB if I cant get a card reader?

Also data rates? how long will two 64gb get me?

TIA.

I have both 64GB S cards and 128GB G cards. To me it makes more sense to have two 128GB cards in the slots ready to shoot than having less storage. Price per GB is less with the newer G cards and you get a reader included with each card.

In recording the G cards have no limits to what can be recorded (S cards will probably work to) and offload is faster. I managed to get about 225MB/s offload to a SSD drive but you might experience both slower and faster speeds.

Cards are in short supply in US as well. For the very slight price difference, I will be buying G cards, which will offload faster. My plan is to use 64gb cards rather than 128gb

Sam CVP can get them for you probably next day.

I have 2x 128G series and 2x 64s series. Will wait now until prices come down and will buy a 3-4 more 128's. Until then I just offload cards on set. 128 full card took 13 mins to transfer via USB 3 to my Dell XPS. Ideally I want to have enough media not to transfer on shoots.

Surinder.

Also forgot to mention check out Osslunds blog pages he did a great write up that I used when deciding which cards to go for.

128gb recommended for doc work. 4k internak recording is about 14 min at 23.98 w a 32gb card.

Congrats Sam on your decision! I know it wasn't an easy one.

I use 64GB 180Mb/s on F55 because at the time they were the biggest, I would take size over offload speed if given the choice.

But of course it depends what you shoot. ie. 8 hours in an 8 hour day, or 3 hours of footage in a 8 hour day. etc..

You can offload via the USB. I am doing that.

Haven't checkeqd the speed but Sony says it is only USB 2. Not sure why they would not use USB 3, shouldn't cost much more and is the current standard.

I don't know the prices at your local dealer but where I live
2 64GB S-type cards are more expensive than 1 128 GB G-type card
including USB3 card reader.

That's why I didn't thought twice but bought 1 x 128GB G-card and
wait for prices to lower next year and buy more and bigger cards fpr
doco work...

Online, all the prices for 2x 64GB S-series cards + a USB 3.0 card reader were cheaper than one 128GB. At least from what I could find. Of course, transfer speeds are slower, but I'm not usually transferring to a RAID or SSD in the field so a lot of that speed is lost.

Transfering the files from the G-card to my iMac late 2013 is at 350 MB/s.

Online retail prices of new products are often not very attractive.
Ask your local dealer, where you buy your FS7. Mine came in at
400€ + VAT.
The price of the camera was somehow lower than on every online shop
I found too...

This is true for me as well. At B&H, 64GB S cards are $300. 128GB G Cards are $800. If you buy 256GB total, that's a huge difference. $1200 for 4x 64GB, $1600 for 2x128GB. The $400 difference is worth an extra 64GB card, plus USB 3.0 reader... and possibly a nice dinner out...
