FS7: Fs7 banding

So, I love my new FS7, truly.

But one thing is making my heart ache... banding in smooths surfaces. At all formats and with all codecs.

I have found other people with similar issues, some say only in XAVC-L, not I. Some say it´s a Premiere CC issue, but I still find banding on bright, smooth surfaces in CB.

Anyone have similar issues?

Could it be the bit depth of your monitor?

Premiere will show banding if you don't choose "render at maximum bit depth" in your sequence/render settings, but if you're seeing it somewhere else, I'd start to wonder if you're just seeing the limit of your monitor's color display.

Thanks. All premiere setting are correct. Have a date with a colourist tomorrow to check the footage on a better monitor. I am using a imac retina, latest version.

Do you have some screen grabs of the worst examples? When you say "all formats", what gamma/gamut are you working in? If you're shooting log then it's critical to get the correct LUTs applied correctly to get a good image in post. I experienced what I thought was (in camera) banding when I first started shooting with the FS-7, but soon discovered a workflow that solved the problems I was seeing, and have never seen any since. Part of that learning process for me personally was to pretty much forget about CB, just FYI ;-).

Best of luck, jason

Hi, thank you. Like I said I am visiting a friend who´s a professional colorist tomorrow, and see if we can sort the matter out. If not, I will post some grabs and more detail info.

Could you please enlighten me with your workflow?

IS CB supposed to be a full quality image?.I remember that Content Browser was definitely quite compressed for quick viewing and you had to ignore artifacts which were pretty gross.

The only time I've seen banding is when shooting MPEG422, which is 8-bit. In XAVC-I, I don't see any banding on the white surface I had the camera pointing at in both tests. I have a 10-bit 4K display and my exported MPEG2 and H.264 footage show banding, while the original footage does not.
