FS7 and the 7Q

So the FS7 looks amazing. And it seems like it's going to work well with the 7Q. I figure a specific 7Q + FS7 thread is needed since so many of us have the 7Q.

Press release:

You can also record the RAW output to the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q – as you can do now with the FS700. The camera has dual SDI outputs and HDMI 2.0.

My questions for Mitch are:

1) Will the 7Q be able to record Pro-Res from it as well as RAW? The people I work with there's a HUGE bias towards Pro-Res.

2) On the FS7, will the 7Q be able to record RAW at 60fps as well? Will it be 4K RAW or UHD

3) What are the benefits of dual SDI ports for the 7Q?

4) Also, will the 7Q be able to record compressed RAW off the F7S?

5) The press release says that 240fps is possible with the FS7, but only to recorder. Will the 7Q support this? Even though I don't use it much, 240fps is nice to have.

Anyways, I'm happy that I get to keep my 7Q. When I get the FS7, there's a good chance I might just swap the EVF with the 7Q. Now that I've gotten used to it, it's so hard to go back to a small LCD and the way I shoot, I prefer not to have my eye on a loupe.

More importantly....will I have to buy a new Sony license or will the Sony RAW license I currently have on my 7Q work with the FS7?

I just pre-ordered a FS7. My hope is that the RAW datastream is exactly the same as the FS700 and hence will work the same with the O7Q FS700 option (for the most part except continuous 240FPS as you mention Gene). Maybe that's wildly off though and each camera has it's own encrypted datastream?

I think the XDCA-FS7 extension unit is more about separating the truly pro features from the camera to keep the cost/price of the camera as low as possible. GenLock, Vmount bat, RAW output, ProRes recording.

This also means that comparing camera to camera, the FS7 doesn't take away from the F5/F55. Well, too much at least ;)

I almost guarantee this will be the case (new license). CD has to make money somehow and they deserve it. I'd pay for RAW (especially compressed) and Pro-Res.

I want to see more footage. The specs are amazing on this camera, but that video from Den Lennie, leaves A LOT to be desired in my eyes. I think the A7s looked better from it's first videos from Den, and I think the look of the FS7Q is so far MUCH better than that footage.

But yeah, that's just one video, I'm sure more will trickle out.

FS7 + Speedbooster Ultra.... an amazing combo on paper...

i am wandering whether this FS7 + odyssey 7q will be able to record 120 fps in 4k?

The Accessory Back is required to get RAW out of the FS7.

The Odyssey7Q FS700 Record Option is now the FS Record Option. It applies to both cameras. If you own an Odyssey7Q FS700 Record Option, you also own an FS7 Record Option.

Odyssey7Q Record options for the FS7 include:
- 4K (4096) RAW up to 60p (no 120p burst available from FS7)
- 2K (2048) RAW up to 240p
- 4K24K 4K RAW to 4K ProRes 422 HQ up to 30p (at least for now; we will see in the future)
- 4K2HD 4K RAW to HD ProRes 422 HQ up to 60p

More record functions and integration may come over time. We are working with Sony to fully support this new camera. Note that while Sony will offer it's own HD ProRes recording via the Accessory Back, we will ll need to see its image quality compared to the Odyssey7Q's. Also, the media used by the FS7 is about twice the price per gig as the Odyssey SSDs.

The dual SDI ports on the camera will be available for other use. The Odyssey7Q will connect to an SDI port on the Accessory Back that is dedicated to RAW output.

The Odyssey7Q doesnot currently record Sony's compressed FS RAW. There is no system in existence that does. Even the Sony solution restructures this RAW format into another so that it can be recorded in the same format as the F5/F55 RAW.

Please note tht the FS7's internal recording is UHD 16:9 but the RAW output is 4K 17:9. This is a similar difference to the internal video v external RAW on the FS700.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for responding. I hope you're having a good trip.

So to get RAW out of the F7S, you need to buy the back unit (expensive) and then also have a second recorder like the R5 or the 7Q? Then you would also need the big Brick battery on the end to power the unit? That's 3 big add ons.

Damn.. that's a lot of stuff!

Anyway to get the 7Q to just record the RAW from the F7S without the back attachment? For example, just through the BNC port?

No, this is how it works.

The accessory back and large battery means a great shoulder balance. And those batteries can be purchases quite reasonably these days, including some with built in P-Tap socket for then powering the Odyssey7Q.

Wow, that's great! Thanks Mitch and CD. Whether or not I change cameras (not a whole lot I need over the FS700 +7Q right now) but it's great to know the option is there to use both cameras.

And that's why it's not replacing fs700. It's a different camera and I am quite amazed how they managed to squeeze it between fs700 and f5.

I see what you are saying. So if you want to shoot RAW or Pro-Res, the F7S is a very expensive proposition. In my circles, Pro-Res is definately preferred.

I actually really do benefit from RAW as semi-regularly I get to shoot some more high end, short format stuff where RAW is great. The decision is a lot tougher now.

Hi Mitch - is this you confirming that the FS7 can output 240fps @ 2K Raw and shoot 180fps internal compressed? I'd say that's actually a pretty big deal.

One more question Mitch. The features for the FS7 look great (4K RAW, 2K @ 240fps, Pro-Res), but how long will it take to fully implement those features? Is it going to be a long wait for a re-code? Or is it a case of just crossing platforming the FS700 code to the FS7 code?

Anyways, great to see that the 7Q will still be very viable.

I believe the process will go something like this:

- Unplug Odysey7Q from FS700 camera.
- Plug Odyssey7Q into FS7 with accessory back.
- Rest.

Both the FS700 and the FS7 output the same FS RAW data stream. There is no work for us to do to make the Odyssey7Q with FS700 Record Option compatible. It already is.

That said, we need to get a finished unit in our hands just to confirm there's no issues afoot. But if there are any they will be addressed before the system is available on the market.
