FS5: FS5 super slow motion artifacts

Hi all,

I posted this on DVInfo the other day but haven't had much luck finding anyone that has had a similar issue. So, I'll try my luck here :)

I shot some super slow motion video at an event I was covering the other day. I mostly shot at 1080p 100fps, but also shot 1 clip at 200fps. The 200fps clip shows some really bad purple/magenta artifacts, rendering it pretty much unusable in my opinion. Some of the 100fps clips also show some minor artifacts.

You can see it on the left side of the runner in the high contrast areas. It seems to only be present where the highlights are clipping/close to clipping (I was shooting in a cave so blowing out the highlights was hard to avoid).

Has anyone else experienced this? Camera fault? SD card fault? Or is it normal and should the highlights be protected when shooting super slow motion?

If it's relevant - I'm using the latest firmware, and the Vortex Media FS5 picture profile (which is fantastic by the way - thanks Doug!).

Any info appreciated.

I'm using the same picture profile and haven't noticed any issues with the picture at high frame rates. I've shot flames in low light at 200fps but not anything that replicates your footage. Any of the same issues at regular frame rates?

Are you talking about the purple fringe in the rocks? Frankly I think it's a beautiful shot. You could probably desaturate the image in that area and it would go away. Great work.
What lens were you using? I would put the lens on a still camera and shoot something high contrast. I bet you see the same thing.

Thanks, but no. If you look closely at the runners left arm, you can see what looks like compression artifacts. I might upload a 100% crop to make it easier to see.

The lens is the Sony 18-105 f4. Unfortunately I don't have another cam to test it on.

I don't have the issue at standard frame rates, just HFR.

It's not the fault of the SD card or the lens. It is an issue with the camera that I have been complaining about since I first got it. It only happens in 1080p, and that of course includes super slow motion. It rears it's ugly head most when shooting into sunlight or heavy backlight as your clip did. The artifacting/fringing happens where a bright area meets a dark area. In 1080p it happens, even on an external recorder like the Shogun.
This does not occur in 4k.
I'm hoping the RAW update will eliminate this problem, as it does seem to be an issue with encoding the 4k image to 1080p before writing it to the SD card or external recorder.
