FS7: FS5 style side grip for FS7

About the only thing (besides the weight difference) that has me excited for the FS5 is the side mounted smart grip which matches exactly the type of shooting I am used to. I never shoulder mount so half the time I am not even using the FS7's smart grip to cut down on bulk.

I noticed there are 4 screws that tighten the actual grip to the adjustable arm that can be removed. I haven't tried it yet but I plan on removing them and attaching one of these threaded arri rosettes:

And attaching it to the FS7's body via a 1/4" to 1/4" male adapter. I noticed the rosettes have a square backing so I will either dremel this down to fit or find some longer screws that can cover the extra distance from the rosette's threads to the smart grips. I ordered the bit and it's supposed to come in tuesday, so I'll share results. Anyone interested in such a mod? Am I stupid for thinking this will work?

I would love such a solution! Perfect for a minimal setup where you want to go handheld without having it on the shoulder!

By the way, I don't think the hole offsets on the original grip match any particular standard - which is why I got blank rosettes and had them drilled to match.

I continue to use the grip with the rosettes, mounted to a "clock arm", which allows lateral rotation and is much more comfortable on the wrist. All the info is on there.

Pay careful attention to the screwdriver info - the screws are tight, tiny and will easily crumble.

Not difficult. Just make sure you use a good quality Phillips head. Can't remember exactly which size - it's all detailed in the thread. The problem with mounting directly to the body is that you've got a female to female rosette configuration. Alternatively, use a short dog bone - SmallRig do some nice ones, plus the quick release one from Shape - and you'll then solve your next problem, which will be sitting the camera on it's arse, without it falling over because the grip is too far offset downwards.
